The RCA Communications Committee met at Pat's Coffee Mug 7:30-8:45 on 4 August 2017. A run-down of the meeting is below.

--Doug

Participants: Jesse, Karen, Scott W, Kristana

Bike Corrals: Need better signage so people can find and use the corral, and know RCA is sponsoring! Something to hand out (stickers or fliers or bike lights)? RCA logo, free parking, velcro patch for arrows. Laminated 8x10 RCA logo for portable kit. Tape and weights/clipboards in the kit. Vistaprint makes stickers and banners. Something high? Helium balloons?
- Kristana will see if Vistaprint makes sandwich boards

Henrietta Park and Ride: Interest in putting a Park-and-Ride near "The Dome" in Henrietta, which would allow bike/car commuters from Henrietta and more distant suburbs (Avon, Rush, Hoeoye Falls) to ride an RTS bus into the city. A former Park-and-Ride nearby was used extensively, and providing an off-street location for buses to pick up and drop off passengers would improve on the current situation, in which buses stop on East Henrietta Road, impeding traffic. Please show your support for the plan by emailing Chris Martin, Henrietta Town Engineer.
- Doug will set up a petition on change.org

Rochester Bicycle Film Festival: 24 August. Bike-in movie ET on 25 August at Public Market. Publicity blast needed. Sponsored by RCA and Wild Byrd Productions and City. Need DJ for the first hour, reaching out to WDKX and Ali Khan. Promote at Public Market mini-stand on weekends? Scott W is leading.

Zagster: Thread on South Wedge Nextdoor concerned about homeless people destroying Zagster bikes. Scott talked to Zagster re-balancer who was flustered being so busy, at the Market every half-hour.

Outreach and diversity: Extend the Santa Ride route beyond white neighborhoods? 8 September: Rochester Recovery Ride (substance abuse). Karen took kids on a ride along River Trail, got great participation, published Letter to Editor in D&C. How to connect better with RBK?

Good stuff, thanks Doug. If you want a local recommendation for print goods, Tracy at MeNu has done great work for me at reasonable prices.

Great to see the committee meets.

Funds must be raised to cover any expenses incurred. We have a negative financial condition.

Can someone elaborate on the Zagster concern expressed on the Next Door thread?  Was there an incident?

Thanks!

Hi Renee,

From Nextdoor South Wedge, 7/27/2017, Here’s the original post:

---------------

Zagster bikes destroyed

Have enjoyed renting these bikes and riding around the city and down the river. Our bikes were stolen off our porch so I suppose $1 per .5 hr is reasonable! I guess Rochester proves yet again that when nice things come to the city they must get destroyed in some way. It's quite upsetting to see 3 bikes at the s. Plymouth station with bent tires and vandalized!

---------------

This was followed by comments posing numerous guesses as to who might be guilty (addicts or bored teenagers) and snarky posts about why we can’t have nice things in Rochester.

But the comments contained no additional details about the incident itself.

FYI:  There was also an incident with the station at Brooks and Genesee, across from Brue Coffee, within the first few days of installation last week. I know nothing about how it happened, but I observed that the station and several bikes had been damaged. It looked like there were tire marks on the sidewalk, so perhaps a car had jumped the curb to cause this damage.

Thanks for the information. I know bike theft/vandalism happens with most bike share programs all over the world, so I don't think this is shocking news. It would be interesting to know how the first few weeks in Rochester compare to those in other cities (in spite of the old "this is why Rochester can't have nice things" naysayers). I can touch base with Jon at Zagster and see if these events are on par with their experience in other cities.

Clarification to the original post: RBK stands for Rochester Bike Kids.
