Yeah I've seen sporadic articles over the years on this. Maybe it is time to get obnoxious and encourage it 'til Albany lawmakers pass a 3-foot-law. I don't wanna be the only Rochester cyclist doing it. What say you?

Rode with my pool noodle for the 1st time yesterday. Rode on Main Street with it all the way to Bulls Head Plaza for the Unity Ride. Boy did it work!

Drivers gave a lot of space and no one was angry. Granted, it wasn't rush hour but it was a success.

Here are some points to keep in mind:
  • Of course riding with one takes away the advantage of riding a vehicle as wide as your shoulders. If there's places or situations when you're used to squeezing in, you won't be able to.
  • If there's any time you ride on the sidewalk or a trail, having the pool noodle isn't ideal. You don't want to wack pedestrians.
  • I removed the pool noodle for the Unity Ride itself. Group rides are for people biking close together, having conversations.
  • Take care with left turns. We teach that cyclists should be near the center line when taking a left turn. The safe passing law is only for drivers passing you on your left going in the same direction. Drivers going past you in the opposite direction aren't required to give you that much space. So don't allow the noodle to pass into the opposing lane when taking a left turn.
