several of these fillms suggest possible co-sponsorships by womnen's
groups, labor, etc
1. nitpickings: "strangelove" is one word; anyone who hasnt seen this
film MUST see it Very funny, macabre
2, The Ken Loach film on the spanish civil war (actually, its mostly
about one aspect of it--the betrayal of the cause by the Commies. If
you've read Orwell's HOMAGE TO CATALONIA --and you absolutely must--you
know the gist of the film). Puts Trots in the very humorous dilemma of
trying to denounce Stalin's betraying/killing of Trots (along with @s)
without denouncing the tactic itself, which of course THEY practiced
when they were in power. The title is LAND AND FREEDOM, and I own a
VHS copy 3. ADDITIONS: THE INTERNATIONALE a doc about teh origin
of the int'l workers' anthem. I will buy a copy of it--is it better
to get a DVD (better quallity, fits with TVD/Indymedia's video
projector) or a VHS (easier to make copies)
MODERN TIMES (Chaplin silent). I own a VHS
ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT early talkie version Own it
MANUFACTURING CONSENT. Doc on media control with noam Chomsky. I
own an early, not-for -distribution VHS copy (The only difference is
that it doesnt have the credits) I have a small speaking part,
incidentally (no autographs, please...) BAD PART: this is a VERY long
film aand SOME say it's dry (although "Noamie" and I disagree)
BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE and FAHRENHEIT 911. I own DVDs
SPARTACUS own DVD
MATEWAN John Sayles on miner organizing. Own VHS. Incidentally, I
think the Sayles film that Alia was describing as "Bushwhacked" is
really SILVER CITY, which is good. (A Bush-figure Gov of Texas (Chris
Cooper), a Rove-like figure(Richard Dreyfuss), a dead body... I THINK
"Bushwhacked " is something else, but maybe someone can fill in some
more info about it
NOT FOR OURSELVES ALONE (Ken Burns' doc oon Anthony and Eliz Cady
Stanton. own VHS. DEAD MAN WALKING death penalty. own VHS
WAG THE DOG War=showbiz
NETWORK old, but more relevant than ever News=showbiz
4. BULWORTH I own VHS
5. I dont know THE SPOOK WHO SAT BY THE DOOR or DROP DEAD GORGEOUS at
all; can someone supply a description?
We decided to start with the first Friday in August, so we need to
astep on it. We seem to have a PLACE (TVD/Indymedia digs) and DATES;
we still need to choose the specific PROGRAMS and the TIMES. I would
suggest 8pm if we're just showing a film--that gets people out in time
to otherwise socialize (you know what i mean...)/hang out and talk. We
didnt discuss either ADMISSION FEE or any REFRESHMENTS.. I would like
the films to be FREE, but i also have an idea of having the films
EARLIER and maybe having pizza. If teh latter, we at least need a
donation, and maybe more...Whaddya think?
\
FILM SELECTION: let's do a weighted straw poll first, just as a way to
get an idea as to our favorites. Zero (meaning you dont care about it
at all) to 5 (meaning: I'll throw a hissy fit if we dont show this).
OF COURSE, if anybody knows something NEGATIVE, say so.....Lotd of
factors should be considered: a film in movie theaters NOW is probably
NOT a good idea, becasue people have probably just seen it; "talking
heads" are generally not good; let's make these fridays FUN events, as
well as political, so keep the this -is good-for -you documentaries to
a minimum. ALSO TIMING: we may want to show, fpor example THE
INTERNATIONALE in MAY, for May Day; this straw poll is for things we
might want to show in August....
IF THE STRAW POLL SEEMS A GOOD WAY TO START, I'LL START:
5s: Venezuela Z video; LAND & FREEDOM (draw), VIVA ZAPATA
4s:STRANGELOVE; WEATHER UNDERGROUND; the two MICHAEL MOORE films
3s: V IS FOR VENDETTA (I know it's recent, but I think it's so
(almost) explicitly @ that it would draw people we want to know;
MATEWAN; WAG THE DOG
2s: BULWORTH; NOT FOR OURSELVES ALONE
...That's all for now.....

How low will we go? Check out Yahoo! Messenger’s low PC-to-Phone call rates.
In terms of what to show.....
1- Weather underground
2- The Revolution will not be televised
3- Reds(I just added this one- Its a 1981 film about John Reed)
4- Spanish Civil War Movie
5- Bulworth
Mind you, of these 5, I've only see the Weather Underground. I'm drawn to
the others based on limited knowledge.
I think the event should be free, but we can make an appeal for donations
and maybe food/ Drink.
