I don't know why you have to open new tab on browser but you can open new window instead and use "Switch Browser" command to switch between browsers.

You can get the cookies of your current session,"save them" and inject them again into the newly opened window

With selenium2library it is as easy as:
Get cookies
Add cookie

Please note add cookie adds only one key-value pair,so,if you have multiple cookies, you need to loop and add all the cookies

Is it possible to open a new tab??? I'm using browserstack and i'm only allowed one window in a session. So a new window is not available therefore a new tab is the route i have to go... Use case is, do something in first tab that will send an email, check email in 2nd tab, return to first and complete.
