Options for ATMEGA644P programing boards

I want to experiment with programing the Arbotix with AVR studio 5.1,
but I am concerned about burning up the board by accident. If I
wanted to order some chips and program them outside of the Arbotix, I
should be able to learn quite a bit with out risking the Arbotix,
correct? My plan was to use a bread board and have a basic set up I
could plug them into and not worry quite as much about burning them
up.
