Saw the first of those yesterday.  The following showed up as a "related" article, and also looks interesting:

The automated braking / avoidance idea has been talked about for a long time -- good to see someone is moving on it.  Having cars networked would help with that -- could allow cars to coordinate emergency maneuvers.  That would likely need to be a local network in order to get info out quickly enough and to constrain the complexity.
