One of the earliest deliberate burials of a modern human comes from Jebel Qafzeh in Israel. Dating to 90,000 years old, the grave contains the bones of a young woman buried with a young child at her feet. An additional 21 skeletons were found in the same cave.

Bones make up the skeletal system of the human body. The adult human has two hundred and six bones. There are several types of bones that are grouped together due to their general features, such as shape, placement and additional properties. They are usually classified into five types of bones that include the flat, long, short, irregular, and sesamoid bones.

The human bones have a number of important functions in the body. Most importantly, they are responsible for somatic rigidity, structural outline, erect posture and movement (e.g. bipedal gait). Due to their rigidity, bones are the main 'protectors' of the internal organs and other structures found in the body.

The bones mainly provide structural stability to the human body. Due to the development of the complex bony structures (e.g. spine) the humans are able to maintain erect posture, to walk on two feet (bipedal gait) and for all sorts of other activities not seen in animals.

The team excavated more than five feet of clay below where they had stopped digging in 2003, with no fossils in sight. But then they found a layer of breccia, a type of rock formed from a jumble of other materials. Tantalizingly, this layer contained fragments of bone that had washed into the cave long ago. At first, the bones seemed to include only animals such as deer and pigs. But under closer inspection, one piece stood out: a nearly complete foot bone that looked human. The team sent the fossil to Philip Piper, a coauthor of the new study, who was looking through the animal remains.

Why the name Bone Island? When early European sailors first came ashore, human bones, leg bones, arm bones, probably a skull or two, were found uncovered and in plain sight. The name seemed a practical choice for the Spaniards, though they may not have understood why there were bones simply cast about the island. They were not strewn about as artifacts from some ancient Indian war. Except in extraordinary cases, the aboriginal people did not bury their dead. Instead, bodies were left exposed to the elements in an act of ceremony.

The vertebrate forelimb of human, bird, and bat may not appear to have much in common, but a closer examination of the anatomy shows that the same bones were applied to a variety of different jobs in each of these species. Evolution doesn't plan ahead. It can only work with what's available. The color coding shows the way the bony elements were modified in each species. You might think that the two wings would be more similar in design because of the job they do but, in fact, the bird wing and human arm are more similar on the interior. However, the bird "hand" is reduced, whereas the bat and human hand have more in common. See if you can find a similar image of a dolphin or whale flipper for another comparison.
