It's been a while ago, but a Roanoke Valley Bird Club member saw an eared grebe at Greenfield in Botetourt County on October 25.  We get horned grebes relatively often here, but almost never get eared.  She has pictures if anyone wants to see them.

Barry,

It was Sid and Mary Lou Barritt that saw the bird.  Mary Lou said she would share the picture with anyone who wanted to see it.  Just email her at barri...@verizon.net.  She actually sent it to us asking if it was an eared or a horned, but we are pretty sure it's an eared.  Let us know if you disagree after you see the picture.  I assume you have pictures of the one that was at the STP already.  If not, I have some I took.

Alyce

Eared Grebes are present all winter at South Holston Lake in Washington Co VA. They have wintered here without a miss for more than 15 years. Our high count was 21 on 6 Oct 2006. I would like to see the photo of your Eared Grebe. Nice bird.

Wallace,

I find your records of this species at South Holston Lake extremely interesting. Do you know if there are other lakes in the East that regularly host wintering Eared Grebes?  Is there an explanation as to why these grebes favor this lake, and do they usually stay most of the winter? I personally, have always thought the Eared Grebes at South Holston Lake represent some of the most interesting records of wintering birds regularly occuring in Virginia, considering how rare they tend to be in the rest of the state.
