Volunteers of the Roanoke Appalachian Trail Club have built and
maintained the pathway in our region since 1932. Their archives
are full of historic photographs like the one above on Tinker
Mountain (April 1932).
The Trail used to go over Ft. Lewis and Poor Mountains. Why was it
moved?
Who were the Nomads, one of the RATC’s founding groups?
What did Carvins Cove look like before the reservoir was built?
Why did local landowners close the McAfee Knob section between
1978-87 and how was it reopened?
Join Diana Christopulos, Ph.D., the archivist for the Roanoke
Appalachian Trail Club, in exploring answers to these and other
questions. Diana has hiked the entire AT and has served in many
volunteer roles, including the presidency of RATC.
