Dear All

Our security guard Stanley has again shown that he is worth every penny by protecting not only Chartfield but the whole Gatesville Road. At 3.30 this morning he was following a suspicious guy coming from the bottom of Anderson road into Gatesville road until he was at Castle Hill Guesthouse and then returned back into Gatesville Road. Stanley then hid away on the empty property behind Chartfield and watched him. As the burglar jumped over the wall into the property of Chartfield, Stanley followed him, arrested and detained him until the police came. The police came promptly so a big thanks to them. The police arrested the suspect found with bolt cutter, drugs, gloves, knives and other various things.

After reporting the burglar at Muizenberg police station and giving a statement, Stanley and myself returned to Chartfield only to find another 3 burglars trying to open a green Mercedes from the neighbours. This time we did not catch them. Police was called out, in minutes they were here but to my knowledge have not arrested anyone. A hammer was found at the car and smoked up drugs.

I really think its time that the community should come together to find a solution for the crime and to think about doing more patrolling trough security in Kalk Bay. I am sure together with the south African Police or mountain men one could work out an affordable solution for everyone.

Kind regards

Florian

Stanley deserves a medal. He must be a very brave man.I agree with you it is time we found some kind of a solution here. As a matter of interest what kind of a hammer was it? I saw a guy yesterday morning going down the road with a huge sledgehammer which I thought strange.
Kind regards
Judy Herbert

Our new upstairs neighbour,Isabelle, in ocean view flats, had her car badly scraped and damaged when she parked just behind the first speed bump on Gatesville .

Judy, she will send some pics soon.

Florian - thank you for crime update. There has definitely been an increase in skollies lately.

Hi Florian

What a busy night that was! Stanley is indeed worth his weight in gold. And I for one am very comforted by his presence, on the odd occasion when one can actually find parking in Gatesville Rd at the moment.
This incident has again highlighted the need for more visible security in our area. The neighbourhood watch scheme unfortunately collapsed, despite the best efforts of the organisers, presumably because it was becoming more and more difficult to find people willing to get up at midnight, 2am and 4am. I did it about 3 times - heaven knows what I would've done had I actually encountered a dangerous thief armed with a sledgehammer!

It would seem then that the only way to have visible "policing" is for us to get together and pay yet more money for another Stanley. And then do we keep it just to Gatesville Rd, and encourage other residents to do the same in their roads? Or combine 2 or 3 roads?
And how much would we need to pay?

It'd be interesting to see what other residents think.

Regards

Cara

Thank you Cara- obviously something has to be done.  I don’t imagine two or three roads could be combined under one Stanley – does he have a brother?   Costof course would be a major factor for some.   Dorci.
