ROAD RAGE MURDER: Police hunt two road bullies

By Ahmad Fairuz Othman

The hunt is on for two road bullies who killed a young executive after
an accident near a busy intersection in Subang Jaya. Mohd Nazri Ismail,
28, did not regain consciousness after being bludgeoned with a steering
lock in the attack on Tuesday.

He died in Hospital Kuala Lumpur this morning, and the police have
classified the case as murder.

Police found him lying next to his brown Proton Wira, with a
five-centimetre-long gash on his head.

A blood-stained steering lock was found at the scene.

It is believed that the Cheras Umno Youth member and his two
assailants had been involved in a traffic accident, and had driven to
the side of the road near Persiaran Kewajipan to square off.

Deputy Internal Security Minister Datuk Noh Omar, speaking to
reporters at Kuala Lumpur Hospital, said the victim telephoned a
colleague just before the incident.

"The victim managed to call his colleague, saying he had been in an
accident and that the people wanted to beat him up," he said.

"This must have been his last call."

Inspector Abang Zulkarnain Abang Mohamad said a witness informed the
police of the fight at 8.30am. About 15 minutes later, a patrol car
arrived at the scene.

The case has been classified as murder.

Superintendent Kamal Rosli Skymmar, Subang Jaya’s deputy police chief,
said the left part of the victim’s car was dented and the front left
tyre rim damaged.

Witnesses to the incident are urged to contact the Subang Jaya police
headquarters at 03-5633 2222.

Noh lashed out at road bullies today.

"We have laws to settle accidents. We can’t settle it by beating
people up and taking the law in our own hands," he said.

Nazri was buried this afternoon. His wife, Normah Mohd Yusof, said
that she had to be strong for her two children, Nur Eryna Jasmin, 3, and
Nur Edryana Farisha, just 10 months old.

"I must continue with my life and take care of my children," said the
bank clerk, breaking down.

Recent road rage cases

A string of road rage incidents have taken place across the country
since the early 1990s.

One of the earliest was in Kuala Lumpur on Jan 6, 1991, when
seven-year-old Ng Bee Li was blinded in her right eye when a bully threw
a crowbar at her father’s car.

The most horrifying assault on a motorist by a bully happened in June
1996, when Leong Wai Pan, 39, had his face badly cut up with a tile-cutter.

Some other major road rage incidents over the last 11 years:

  • September 1993: Filipino musician Clong Pichay, 34, died after being
stabbed twice by a van driver at Kampung Sungai Kayu Ara, Damansara.

  • March 1996: A woman was beaten up so badly by road bullies that she
collapsed by the road at Jalan Tujuan, Subang Jaya.

  • June 2002: Lawyer Datuk Balwant Singh, 83, shot dead despatch rider
R. Gobalakrishnan when the latter approached his car with a piece of
wood in his hand on Jalan Maarof, Bangsar, in an argument over a traffic
incident.

  • April 2003: A 73-year-old man died after reportedly being assaulted
by a road bully in Bahau, Negri Sembilan. See Boon Pau was driving his
car towards Bahau town when a man on a motorbike grazed his car.

  • November 2004: A road bully stabbed Teo Kok Siang, 22, to death
during an argument after their cars were involved in a collision at
Km20, Jalan Johor Baru-Pontian.
