Are there and guides or best practices for plugin creation?

I am using the wiki for a world building for a DnD campaign im working on and would like to write a plugin for character sheets.  Are there any guidelines or best practices that I should be considering when I start this?

I think it would be a page plug in, but im not positive.  I assume a text plugin would affect how the text is displayed.  what would a repo plug in be?
