One of the things I like best about the Roadhouse is the variety of
songs, styles, and moods present in a typical show. Way to go! With
that said, I'll admit to a particular fondness for horns. As an
aspiring (but ever amateur) horn arranger and saxophonist, it's always
nice to hear how the pros do it - at a minimum, it's a great source of
ideas, and occasionally I'll run across a phrase that (to me) is as
close to perfect as I'll ever find. All the good stuff goes into my
"bag of licks" and will some day show up on the horn charts I write for
my band. It's especially nice to see so many groups working with more
than one horn - harmony arrangement can be a challenge, especially when
you're transcribing by ear! Even the traditional 12-bar progressions
admit infinite variety which is both a challenge and an opportunity to
the arranger.
Anyway, my compliments on the excellent podcast and on your eclectic
selection style.
I love horns in blues. I'm not sure people always think about brass and
sax when they think of blues, but I sure do. That should be obvious by
the number of jump blues tunes I play in the show.
I'm an old brass player myself. I played trumpet for years and have
great respect for those out there playing night after night.
