The next RTP Mac will have the ability to show your route using Google Maps.
A screenshot of the new window and info about it is below.

Comments?

The Google map window is for information only

  1. Edits made to the routes on the Google map do not change the associated Road Trip Planner file in any manner.
  2. Edits to the Google map are not saved.
  3. You may print the Google map window, but you cannot save it to disk.
  4. You can drag the Google map route to create alternative routes, but this is a Google-only feature.  Apple Maps does not allow you to drag a route.
  5. Road Trip Planner does not use Google maps as the main map because Google maps does not have a software development kit for the Mac (they do for the iPhone, but not for the Mac).
  6. Google map can route a maximum number route pins which is determined by Google (currently 25).

Hi Bill,
So the calculation is still done in Apple Maps?

Hi Cemil,
Yes, the Google Map window does nothing to or with the RTP file (technically not possible at this time).  It simply presents routing as Google would route your trip.
Thanks,
Bill

More feature enhances to the Google map below.  Want to see these features with RTP?  It can happen if Apple Maps has the features, then by extension so will RTP.  Tell Apple you want these features in their Apple Maps by using this form: <http://www.apple.com/feedback/maps_mac.html>.

The Google map will also have the option to route using a bicycle:

In addition, it tends to route over winter conditions better than Apple map does.
Another feature: route up to 150 days from now — see below.

Question regarding the new Google Map window:

Would anyone want to save the Google Map window to disk as an HTML file?  It would require you to have a Google API key as described here:

If there’s a desire to save the file to disk and you have (or would get) your own Google API key, let me know.

Sounds like too much trouble...

I agree.  That’s why there is no “save to disk” function.  I doubt if anyone would go thru all that.
Thanks,
Bill
