Hello all

The issue I’ll describe may be similar to the topic “RTP iPad iOS Issue” from 26-Feb-2023.

I’ve used and loved RTP for MacOS and iPad OS for many years. The best trip planner by far, IMO.

Recently - maybe 3 weeks ago the following began on the iPad.

I open RTP and then open an existing RTP POI file. Lets call it “Everything Bagel” (EB for short:-)

EB can be a file “On My iPad” or it can be from my Cloud choices.

Once open RTP on iPad shows the name of the file at the top - ‘Everything Bagel” in my example.

If I swipe up to see the thumbnails of all running apps the RTP thumb shows the correct filename still.

If I tap RTP’s thumb and go DIRECTLY back to RTP then “EB” is still the selected file.

If I tap some other app (e.g. Setting), swipe up for the the thumbs I still see RTP and “EB” on the thumb.
However when I tap the RTP thumb “EB” is not the display file. It appears a blank file is replacing “EB” and I see “Road Trip Planner” across the top.

This happened with iOS 16.4.1(a) and now with iOS 16.5 (newest).

I have Deleted RTP and all its document and reinstalled

I have shut down and restarted the iPad.

As a further test after reinstalling I opened the “Sample File” and I see the same action with it.

——

As I have an M1 MacBook I installed the iOS app and it works as expected. The correct POI file is retained when moving between apps/applications and back to RTP

Additional info:
I previously had to use a Gmail account as my Apple ID for App Store Purchases. I got tired of have to remember to use that for purchases so I’ve recently begun using my @mac.com account. Years ago Apple would not let me but that changed a few years ago.

Thus I recently re-purchased RTP for iOS using my @mac.com account. I deleted it from my iPad, logged in correctly as my mac.com email, made the purchase and downloaded it.
Could there be some RTP setting I am missing to retain the opened POI file?

I don’t own a mobile phone but I asked a friend who owns RTP to go through the same test and she reported there is no issue. Her iPad is on iOS 16.5

——
My iPad is a gen3 iPad Pro 11” and is now on iOS 16.5

Thank you for any help

I just confirmed what you reported; Not too sure if anything can be done as it may be an iOS issue. But I’ll take a look and see if anything can be done. The good news is no data is lost when this happens. You just have to select the file again in the file list.

Thanks,
Bill

Odd that it happens on my iPad but not my friends with the same iOS version. I’ll visit her soon to make sure she has the same RTP version...

And it is a pain - I use a 500mb a month data only plan on my iPad. Each time I have to reopen an RTP POI file I then have to Refresh the routes.

I know this may not use much data but if I were on a 2 week long drive camping trip feel sure it would eat up my 500mb…

thx

930pm update (east coast of USA). My friend brought her iPad w/ iOS 16.5 and RTP keep the POI file between app swaps.

So seems unlikely to be an iOS issue.

Bill - you were able to recreate this. Do you have say, an iPhone and an iPad and can do two iDevice tests?

All I have beyond my iPad Pro 11 3rd is an iPod Touch 6th generation. I could charge that and see...

I can confirm it’s an app bug, not an iOS issue. It’s only an issue with the iPad. That said, I’m not sure when a fix will be available, sorry.

Does this RTP bug affect only certain models of the iPad? I had not mentioned around this same time I upgraded from the original iPad Pro 11 (1st ten) to my new 3rd gen.

I really depend on RTP on my cellular iPad. I don't have a mobile phone and my car has no nav system. I make many local journeys as I help rescue kittens and cats for a non-profit group. I depend on RTP to show me the way.

Is this bug caused by a difference between the A chip vs M chip?

If reverting back to some older (or newer) model iPad will restore correct functionality to RTP I would.
thx

I don’t know the answer to your question. I have an iPad Gen 10, running the latest iOS, and that’s the only iPad I have available to test. You could ask other iPad owners in this group to test for you.

Aaaargggg - today (Monday) I've "restored" my iPad to factory default the added only RTP. I did this in hopes I had some corrupted RTP setting.

But no - I can still open the Sample File and have RTP forget I was using that file when I swap out then back to RTP.

Bill - I know you are retiring / selling your software off. We all deserve to retire and enjoy our time. But please please find a squish this bug. I do not find RTP very usable when my mapping file has to be reloaded each time I return to RTP.

best wishes

Thanks for the confirmation that the bug fix works.  It did seem to be an annoying bug!

I appreciate the offer for a donation, but that’s not necessary. Instead you could write a review of RTP at the App Store. That’s always helpful.
