There are some clear and significant benefits of online race
registration: It is far less time-consuming because hand-written
entries don't have to be keyed into the database; you don't have to
waste time trying to guess what someone has written when their
handwriting is near illegible; you don't have to worry about entries
arriving after you've cut off registration. But very few races only
have online registration. One that has it has sold out for the last 3
years. So why haven't the rest of us made that conversion?

It's more chicken - less egg. You don't sell out a race bacause you have online rego; you can offer only online rego with a race that sells out.

Broadband penetration is still well under 100%, so if you're looking to build a race I think a paper option is still viable. In any event, if your race isn't sold out you will still have paper post-rego. The key is to have a form with text blocks.....easier to decipher!

We normally get 90-93% online registration
Putting in 5-8% by paper is a pain, but not nearly as bad as 50/50
Arlon is right about selling out.
However some old codgers just love using checks and sending in chicken scratch...apps

Interestingly enough, our paper registration is up this year actually bucking the online trend we were seeing.

The ‘codger’ moniker is not correct as we see runners of all ages opting for paper. Who knows, it may be an increased concern about online security.

What I know is this: we’ll do as much as we can whenever we can do get people involved, so if it’s the nightmare of deciphering handwriting (which is more reader friendly in the codger category than the younger set – thought: are we looking at a generation of people who can’t complete a handwritten form? Discuss…) we’ll stick with it…
