Some are, most aren't. For some, organizing races is what they do for
a living, and so if they don't charge for it, they have no income. For
many, it is what they do to support one non-profit group or another.
But all race directors put in an extraordinary amount of time to plan,
organize, and hold their races. So, whether they do it for a living or
not, should all race organizers be compensated for their time and
energy and expertise?

Jay,

I don't think there is a right or wrong answer here.

I think it is a great thing that so many race directors volunteer their time for the benefit of a worthy non-profit. Running a race in which the profits go to a good cause feels good as well. This is the best case scenario.

On the other hand, putting on a race takes a lot of hard work and time. If a race director wants to put on a race and draw money from it I have no problem with it as long as he or she is up front about it.
