What do you do with the person who shows up on race day, is not on
your roster, is convinced that they have preregistered, is without a
confirmation in hand, and without money to pay for a new registration
(assuming registration is still available). The options, as I see it,
are A) give them a bib, and tell them to mail a check to you later
(and hope that you get it), B) tell them to find a way to get the
money and to register if they want to do the race, and that you'll
send them a refund if you later find proof of preregistration. Option
A is kinder but riskier. Option B takes a harder line, but eliminates
the risk of giving away a registration.

We tell people who are starting to register online to expect a
confirmation email if they complete the process properly, and to bring
that confirmation to packet pick-up, just in case there is a question.
So we take option B. We try to be gentle and understanding about it,
but our race is a fundraiser, after all!
