Question in two parts: Do you provide splits timing in your race? if you do, do you use display clocks, or do you have volunteers call out the time as racers pass by? Clocks are easy and more racer-friendly (they can see their times as they approach the marks, and don't have to rely on being able to hear the volunteer to get their splits), but volunteers are a lot less expensive (unless you have your own clocks). Where do you think this falls, re; Andy's discussion at our meeting about what racers have a right to expect at a road race? Anyway, back to splits timing. We gnerally don't do it at our (LOCO)races
and under the "dashed expectations" category, I don't recall a complaint.
Think of it, what's the first thing you do when you go by a clock or (more
typically) someone shouting out a split - you look at your watch and grumble
to the runner next to you that the clock is slightly off or the mile is
(pick one) long/short. These days, with GPS, we get more comments that the
course was "slightly long" and, as the USATF officials will tell you, it
porbably is - they measure the course as the perfect runner might cover it
and then, in accordance, with USATF rules, are allowed to add a small %
variation.

Put me in the pro-split clock camp. Of course it is important that the clocks be accurate but that isn't rocket science.
When I am in a race, I know that I look for the mile clocks and glance at my watch for a backup.
We have digital clocks at mile 1, 2 and 3 in the Great Island 5K.

Thought of something as I was reading a race description today: is it
okay/ethical to exaggerate registration numbers? So, real registration = 300
and they claim to attract over 1,000 runners...

I am not exactly sure what you are asking but to me it is unethical to lie about your registration numbers. However, if you had 1000 people last year, it might be reasonable to say that you are expecting up to 1200 runners this year.
