I was wondering how other Race Directors handle the "insurance" and
liability piece of their races. I've put on small races before where
the local Recreation Department has accepted liability for the race.
We're looking to put on a new race (under 5 miles, public roads, 150
runners) through our non-profit organization. With nobody to accept
the liability, how have you handled this in similar? I'm assuming the
Waiver that individuals sign in the registration packet isn't enough
to assume liability entirely on the runner's behalf? I've also heard
of purchasing liability insurance...any experiences on that? Thanks
in advance for your input!

them.
I can send you the company we deal with info to find rates. Let me
know.

If you have your race sanctioned by USATF, liability coverage comes with the sanctioning.  It's a very good idea to either have an attorney on your committee or consult with one.  The disclaimer, while important, will not keep you out of court if something bad happens.

USATF sanctioning is not unreasonably expensive.  For example, a race with 700 - 1000 participants, costs $410 in sanctioning fees and buy a couple million in coverage.  The fee breakdown and coverage details are on their website.

Unfortunately we live in a world of lawsuits, personally I couldn't risk being involved with an uninsured event as a director or even an identified committee member.

Josh,

Also check out the Road Runners Club of America. Member
clubs/races/organizations can purchase liability insurance through them. I
have used them since 2002 and know many running clubs, as well as
non-profits use them.

In order to receive a permit for a race in Portsmouth, one must provide the
City with a GL Certificate for $1 million that names them as a Certificate
Holder on the event date.
Additionally, each participant must sign the race waiver.
