I imagine many of you have experienced a similar situation, but I am finally able to watch the show uncensored, and wow I am really shocked at how much was cut. I knew some episodes were cut due to the awkward cuts, but it seems like 2 out of every 3 episodes had at least one line removed from it. Some of these cuts make no sense, for example anytime kissing on the mouth is mentioned, the word mouth is skipped. Personally I don't see how this makes things more friendly, surely this opens up the opportunity for less SFW kisses.
Kisssis is an anime adaptation of the manga series created by Bow Ditama and animated by Feel. The series revolves around a boy named Keita Suminoe who finds himself the centre of attention of his twin step-sisters, Ako and Riko. The first OVA was released on December 22, 2008, with subsequent episodes released with volumes of the manga until April 6, 2015. The anime television series aired on AT-X between April 5, 2010 and June 21, 2010, and was released on DVD from June 23, 2010.
Kisssis (stylized as kisssis; pronounced "kiss sis") is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Bow Ditama. It began serialization in Kodansha's Bessatsu Young Magazine in December 2005. It was then moved and serialized in Weekly Young Magazine from 2008 to 2009, and was serialized in Monthly Young Magazine from 2009 to 2021. Kodansha collected its chapters in twenty-five tankōbon volumes. It was adapted into an original video animation series, released from December 2008 to April 2015. A 12-episode anime television series by Feel aired from April to June 2010 on AT-X.[3]
A 12-episode anime television series adaptation of the manga aired on AT-X from April 5 to June 21, 2010. A censored pre-release of the first episode aired online on March 28, 2010. The opening theme is "Balance Kiss" (バランスKISS, Baransu Kisu) performed by Ayana Taketatsu and Yuiko Tatsumi, and the ending theme is "Our Steady Boy" by Yui Ogura and Kaori Ishihara. The ending theme for episode 12 is "Futari" (ふたり, The Two of Us) by Yui Ogura and Kaori Ishihara. The first DVD volume was released on June 23, 2010. Unlike the TV airings of the other episodes, certain scenes of episodes nine through twelve were censored. A DVD/Blu-ray Disc edition has subsequently been released without the censorship.
Some have cited the cultural norm being the main reason like you mentioned, but I think it doesn't really hold if you examine what happened in the later episodes. They proposed and literally got engaged with gold bands on their fingers, and if the entire series was meant to be reflective of the queer culture in Japan, I kind of doubt that would happen.
Louis Kemner has been a fan of Japanese animation since 1997, when he discovered Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z in elementary school. Now he's a bigger anime/manga fan than ever, and is ready to share what he knows with readers worldwide. He graduated high school in 2009 and received his Bachelor's in creative writing from UMKC in 2013, then put his skills to work in 2019 with CBR.com. He's always looking for a wonderful new anime to watch or manga series to read.
In episode seven, Denji and his fellow devil hunters go out to get drinks together after defeating the Eternity Devil. Since Himeno offered to give whoever defeated the devil a kiss, Denji asks her to deliver on her promise. But Himeno drinks too much, and Denji's first kiss becomes a nightmare as she pukes into his mouth. He then swallows the puke, making the situation even worse. In the manga this moment is shown in graphic detail, down to the chunks of food floating in Himeno's vomit. But in the anime, this is blurred by censorship pixelation, lessening the disgusting impact of the moment. This isn't the first time the Chainsaw Man anime changed the manga, but it is the first majorly negative change to the series.
This censorship is unfortunate, as this is a very important moment for Denji and the series as a whole. While he has already realized conceptually that sexual acts without emotion aren't fulfilling, he still accepts Himeno's offer of a kiss, showing that he is still willing to give in to his carnal desires even for a moment as important as a first kiss. But after such an abjectly disgusting experience, Denji learns that he can't just follow his sexual urges whenever it is convenient for him. This will become more important for him as the series continues.
This all isn't to say that the moment wasn't gross in the anime, despite its censorship. It was still incredibly gross. But given the level of detail present in the Chainsaw Man manga, it was much more impactful on the page than on the screen. Hopefully the Chainsaw Man anime will not be forced to censor any more of the manga's best moments, as outside this instance it has adapted the series almost perfectly.
