Development and evaluation of a webcasting facility The University of Plymouth has been trialling various forms of webcasting. In March 2005, ILS and TV Studio staff developed a more hardware dependent method through which a live TV signal (showing either the presenter or, via a mixer, powerpoint slides) was streamed to the web using a VBRICK. More recently (from November 2005) Adrian Vranch and EdAlt have been trialling a more software dependent method using software called GoodMood. The FHSW has been involved with both methods and wishes to 'keep its options open' with regard to possible continued use of the earlier VBRICK method. GoodMood has various software features such as a 'message window'. With the VBRICK method viewers used their ordinary email to send messages to the presenters. I would like to see a chat room facility incorporated within the webcasting web page and a trial of this method of webcasting. The study would therefore comprise:
a) a literature review (mainly using the Internet) of what webcasting is, what methods are available, reported experiences with different methods summarising the pros and cons of each. b) the development of (i) a chat room facility, (ii) a 'log on' and monitoring system to know who is watching, to complement the 'VBRICK' method of webcasting.
c) the recruitment of several lecturers from FHSW and agreement with them of what they would want the system to do and so how it should be evaluated d) a trial of the use of the system with those lecturers and their 'secondary users' (viewers of the webcast)
