I'd like to continue our discussion of the program presented at the
last ILT meeting. We jumped right into a discussion of how to
implement such a thing at Roosevelt but after chewing on it over the
weekend, I wanted to take a step back and discuss its benefits and
drawbacks.

I know assessment drives instruction, but I also thing student
engagement is huge. I would like to consider moving some of our energy
used in record-keeping and assessing into changing the way we approach
assignments and projects with students. Getting them involved in group
work, creating their own meaning from the material (I'm a
constructivist at heart), and letting them create an authentic, MEDIA-
RICH, assessment might be a way to get them more involved in their own
education.

I agree with Arlene. In the last MYP committee meeting, we were
reworking our mission statement. One of the things we talked about was
"fostering a love of learning." My fear is that the focus on
assessment and reteaching/remediation will do the opposite. Putting
together something like this will only be worthwhile if it forces us
to "preflect" on how we teach and engage our students.
