FYI - We’ve been busy for the last two weeks. Our friend John helped the first weekend home with final touches to Brian’s temporary living quarters, errands, chores, and made a Brian’s welcome home & Paula’s birthday dinner. It was great to have help.
Brian had 8 days of home physical and occupational therapy. The therapists gave suggestions for tools and modifications to help with daily activities. He now gets dressed in 30 minutes, a new record! His daily activities are getting easier as he works hard and we figure out what works.
After consulting several doctors, they recommended a 14-day heart monitor to rule out heart-related problems that could’ve caused the stroke. If nothing’s found, they’ve recommended a standard set of drugs to reduce the risk of another stroke.
Thursday, he started outpatient therapy. They recommended 2X a week for 4 weeks and weekly after that. Two months of appointments are booked, and additional equipment for home therapy is being ordered. Brian has a lot of ‘homework’ to do between appointments.
We’re grateful for everyone helping with meals (or gift cards). We’re exhausted after all the appointments and other things, so we can’t imagine having to cook healthy meals too. Thanks again! We’re close to picking out a meal service to help in the long run. There are still a few days left on the meal train if you want to help.
https://mealtrain.com/emknv1Our insurance company assigned a social worker to help us find respite care and to ensure Paula doesn’t get worn out or help if she’s sick. We’ve also reached out to stroke support groups in town and plan to attend one soon. Paula tries to do at least one self-care activity daily, including meditations, journaling, and therapist visits. Brian says he naps. Thanks for continuing to check in on our well-being.
Due to the long journey, we may send fewer updates in the future. But we’ll let you know if something major happens. We’ll also reach out if we need help. We remain hopeful for Brian’s continued hard work, great medical care, and your positive thoughts and prayers. We’re grateful for everyone’s help so far!
Love, Brian and Paula
