I hope someone can help me. Twenty years ago, I spent 2 years in
Soviet School #45 in Moscow while my father worked at the US Embassy.
One of my former classmates, still a very good friend who now works
for BP in London, is getting married to an American in September. I'd
like to bring along a guitar and add a Russian note to the
celebration--I suspect only a few close family members will make the
trip to Massachusetts, and I'd like them to feel a bit more at home.
One thing I remember well about Russian gatherings was the inevitable
guitar and/or piano accompaniment to every evening.
Unfortunately, I didn't attend any weddings as a schoolchild, and I
don't know which songs might be considered traditional for a true
Russian wedding. I have "A Russian Song Book" (ed., Rose Rubin) and
"Russikye Narodniye Pyesni" (ed., V. Beketova), so if nothing else I
might try Vdol' po Ulitsye Myetyelitsa Myetyot or Daleko,
Daleko. . . .
So this is a 2-part request: 1) What are the most appropriate songs?
2) Where can I find lyrics and guitar chords for them?
Spasibo bol'shoye!

Try "Korobushka". It's an easy tune and a simple but fun couples dance.
You can find the sheet music to Korobushka here:
http://www.penn-balalaika.com/Website_Version2/Balalaika_Sheet_Music.pdf
It's a 35 MB file packed with PDFs of sheet music for various Russian
and other tunes. Korobushka should have a lead sheet plus parts for
various other balalaikas and domras.
Lyrics to Korobushka are here, both transliterated and in Cyrillic:

You may also want to try some waltzes. There are a few in the PDF
link above.
Good Luck,
