Be prepared to get up off your seat and dance along with the Barynya
ensemble, a unique group of top Russian, Cossack, and Ukrainian
dancers and musicians. Immerse yourself in the delightful sounds of
traditional Russian instruments such as the balalaika, garmoshka, and
Gypsy guitars as you feast your eyes on the breathtaking crimsons and
sapphires of each costume. Barynya has performed internationally with
the Moiseev Dance Company and the Virsky Ukranian National Dance
Company, as well as within the United States at such prominent
locations as Lincoln Center in New York City as well as the National
Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C.
Performance tickets are FREE and are distributed on a first-come basis
Grand Avenue at 2nd Street.
Tickets for 11 a.m. performance distributed beginning at 10:00 a.m.
Tickets for 12:30 p.m. performance distributed beginning at 11:00 a.m.

01. "SUBBOTEYA" ("Субботея" - “Saturday Affair”) - Russian folk song.
02. "BARYNYA" ("Барыня") - original Russian folk dance with short
"Chastushki" (two line folk verses). It was the first number in the
program that was presented by ensemble back in 1991. The Barynya dance
is an alternation of limericks and frenetic dancing. The content is
always humorous. The dancing consists mainly of fancy stomping and
traditional Russian squat work. In old times in Russia the word
"Barynya" (Landlady) was used by simple folks as a form of addressing
to a woman of higher class.
03. "SVETIT MESYATS" ("Светит месяц" - “Shining Moon”) - variations on
Russian folk song: "The Moon Is Shining Brightly" (sometimes
translated as "The New Moon is Lighting") written by the "Father of
Russian Balalaika" Vasily Vasileyevich Andreyev (1861-1918).
Instrumental.
"...The moon is shining brightly,
The white nightfall is shining too, My pathway is eliminated
All the way to the dear's house..."
04. "KAZACHIY" ("Казачий танец" - “Cossack dance”). Kazaki are better
known outside of Russia as Cossacks (Turkish word meaning Outlaw,
Adventurer or freebooter/freeman). The Cossacks had their own
independent republic for most of the 17th century, and in 1835 reached
an agreement with the Russian Czar, according to which they would
provide him with highly trained soldiers in return for land and
special privileges. Kazaki (Cossacks) are first mentioned in the 15th
century as freedom-loving exserfs, Tatars and descendants of Scythian
warriors living on the open plains of southern Ukraine and Russia's
Don River basin. Many Hollywood movies depict fearless, captivating
warriors, quite lively, dancing with their sabers.
05. "OCHI CHERNYE" ("Очи черные" - “Dark Eyes”) - popular Russian
Gypsy traditional song.

Frightful and beautiful eyes
I love you so, I fear you so
I've seen you at a sinister hour
Dark eyes, flaming eyes"...
06. "NANAITSY" ("Борьба двух нанайских малышей" - “wrestling Nanai
Kids”) - idea of this dance belong to Igor Alexandrovich Moiseyev,
famous Russian choreographer (1906-2007). The sumo-style kind of
wrestling match is the favorite sport of the Nanai people who inhabit
the frigid Northern region of Russia.
07. "METELITSA" ("Метелица" - “The Snowstorm”)- traditional Russian
song and dance.
"...Snowstorm is blowing along the street,
My sweetheart is walking there, Please stop, do not walk, dear,
Let me look at you, my joy!..."
08. "SKOROGOVORKI" (русские скороговорки - Russian tongue-twisters).
Performed a capella by Mikhail Smirnov, artistic director of "Barynya"
ensemble.
09. "GOPAK" ("Гопак" - “Hopak”) - national dance of Ukraine. Hopak
is also referred to as Gopak or Cossack dance. Hopak has been
incorporated into larger artistic opuses such as operas and ballets.
10. "VDOL' PO PITERSKOI" ("Вдоль по Питерской" - “Along The Piterskaya
Street”) - popular Russian folk song. All famous Russian opera
singers and soloists included this song into their repertoire for
over a hundred and fifty years.
11. "DANILA COOPER" ("Данила Купор" - “Daniel Cooper”) - dance of the
Russian Nobility during Napoleonic wars (1803-1815). This dance was
mentioned in the book of famous Russian write Leo Tolstoy.
12. "DVE GITARY" ("Две гитары" - “Two Guitars”) - Russian Gypsy song
and dance.
