Hola Family!

Some insights I gained from my studies this week:
  • I studied about the United Order (which was once called the United Firm...see Newel K. Whitney and the United Firm referenced in the Individual/Family manual), and was led to a talk by Henry B. Eyring from the April 2011 General Conference (Opportunities to Do Good). He quotes the Hymn, "Have I Done Any Good in the World Today?" It was an inspiring song that brought peace to my heart. This below is a story I remember hearing in conference when he gave this talk. It hit home since I grew up in that region and lived in Rexburg for years. People in Rexburg still talk about it to this day. There's even a museum for it in Rexburg (which we never made it to).
I saw that same happiness in the faces of people who helped for the Lord in Idaho years ago. The Teton Dam burst on Saturday, June 5, 1976. Eleven people were killed. Thousands had to leave their homes in a few hours. Some homes were washed away. And hundreds of dwellings could be made habitable only through effort and means far beyond that of the owners.

Those who heard of the tragedy felt sympathy, and some felt the call to do good. Neighbors, bishops, Relief Society presidents, quorum leaders, home teachers, and visiting teachers left homes and jobs to clean out the flooded houses of others.

One couple returned to Rexburg from a vacation just after the flood. They didn’t go to see their own house. Instead, they found their bishop to ask where they could help. He directed them to a family in need.

After a few days they went to check on their home. It was gone, swept away in the flood. They simply walked back to the bishop and asked, “Now what would you like us to do?”

  • My desire is to be as selfless as that couple and many others who assisted during that terrible tragedy. I hope through this current calling that I'll be able to gain even more Christlike love for my fellow men as I attend and participate in my meetings with the bishopric and ward council, minister to my assigned families, and as I try to minister to those who are brought up in my meetings. I'm not perfect. I'm still an introvert, but I hope to do better.

I thought about Edward Bunker who was part of the United order experiment in bunkerville.
