Webought a batch of Dell Optiplex 790 Mini Tower PCs for sale (Grade A, off-lease). I usually install Windows 10 on all of them before selling them, but this time I waited until the Windows 10 Spring update so our clients would not have to go through a major update so soon after purchase.

I installed the new Spring version of Windows 10, with an older Radeon 4600 video card. When I installed Windows 10, I was using the HDMI output on the card, and everything worked perfectly, including the audio.

Once I moved it to its station, and plugged in VGA and a cable for the monitor speakers, I could not get any audio. Usually this would just be changing the output from HDMI to the speakers, but no luck this time.

The only audio device installed is "High Definition Audio Device" which I always thought was specifically for HDMI. There should also be, as far as I know, another audio device for the speakers, but there is none - not even for the internal speaker. When I go into Sound in the control panel, it only lists Digital Audio (HDMI) and nothing else. When I right-click, I can see that Show Disabled and Disconnected devices are both checked (ON).

When I click Recording device it says "No audio devices are installed". Device manager does not show any non-working devices. When I try clicking on the speaker icon, Windows goes straight to detecting problems, and when it completes it just says there is nothing plugged into the audio output, which there is. I have tried uninstalling the audio driver, but there is no option to delete it so it re-installs as soon as I scan for changes, or reboot.

There is no audio driver for the Optiplex 790 Tower version on the Dell downloads page. There is only the Intel chipset driver, and when I try and install it, it acts as though it installed but clearly goes so fast that it does not actually install, even though it claims it did.

I have tried the Realtek audio drivers using for the SFF and desktop versions of this PC, but the don't do anything. I have also downloaded the newest drivers from Realtek's site, but they also did nothing.

I worked on this PC for most of the day on Friday, which is shop time, so I really don't want to have to reinstall Windows 10 again since I have office, outlook and all the rest of my apps installed and working.

I could just start using HDMI since the monitor has it, but I would like to leave that connector free for testing client's monitors and TVs. Besides, I can't leave a partially non-working PC on my bench. I have to know what's going on so, if any of my clients also have this issue, I can correct it for them.

Anyone reading this, I would recommend you not use HDMI if you are doing a clean install of Windows 10, but if you only have HDMI I would recommend updating to the newest BIOS. You will not find A02 or A03 on the drivers page. I had to Google "Download A02 BIOS for Dell Optiplex 790" to find the correct A02 and A03 BIOS. After that, the A10 BIOS on the dell support page worked.

Also, I've never heard of AMD Radeon 4600, but it sounds very old. Even cards like AMD 5670, 5770, 5870 barely have working bundled drivers under Windows-10 64bit (but they do seem to work). Anyway, I suppose that could be causing a problem since it involves audio when using HDMI.

You should see the on-board analog audio card in Device Manager. I guess I'm suggesting the on-board is actually there and named "High Definition Audio Device" . Alternatively, audio devices for HDMI usually have "HDMI" in the name.

You were right the first time. I am now using VGA with an audio cable, but there is no audio coming from the audio jack. That makes sense because I have removed the video card, and now the system doesn't install any audio device at all. None.

The other three Optiplex 790 we have left here running the same version of Windows 10 are not having a problem with audio. They are not Windows 10 certified, but they have all worked fine with Windows 10 (we have sold about 80 of them).

Right now, I am running a stock Optiplex 790, and there is no audio device at all. It has installed the Intel video driver, but there is no Sound and Game Controller category in Device Manager. I also cannot see any way to disable or enable the audio device in BIOS.

That was the problem. Since I installed Windows 10 using the HDMI connector, it never activated the normal audio input jack on the PC. When I removed the HDMI connector, and then plugged in speakers, it wouldn't work. I think that, perhaps, installing the system using a VGA connector and an audio jack may make the normal audio input work. If HDMI is needed it can be installed later.
