SSL opportunities are available through Project Linus, an organization that provides handmade blankets to children experiencing trauma in Montgomery County and surrounding areas!

Project Linus is a national registered nonprofit organization with chapters across the country.  The Montgomery County Maryland chapter works with partner organizations like Holy Cross Hospital, Children's Hospital, homeless and family violence shelters, and the Montgomery County Department of Social Services (among many others) to distribute blankets to children who are in the hospital, homeless, in foster care, in shelters, and in other situations where just a small comfort can make a major difference.  All these blankets are made by volunteers.

Middle and high school students can earn SSL hours with Project Linus in 2 ways:

1.      Attending one of our monthly meetings and helping us to make blankets.  From September to June, the chapter meets monthly, 6:30--8:30 pm, in the Wood Middle School Cafeteria. From October through April, we have a second meeting each month in the cafeteria of Baker Middle School, also on a Monday from 6:30--8:30 pm.   Our first meeting of the year will be Monday, September 8, at Wood.  All the meeting dates are listed below, on the attached flyer, on the Montgomery County Volunteer website, on our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/projectlinus.mc) and chapter website (www.tinyurl.com/projectlinusmcmd).   Please note that we provide all the necessary supplies and our adult volunteers supervise the blanket making activities.  No special skills or experience is required.  No pre-registration is required -- just show up and have fun.  We provide completed SSL forms at the end of the meeting.

2.      Students can also earn SSL hours by making blankets outside of meetings, provided that pictures and documentation are provided.  We ask that students making blankets at home first attend one of our meetings to make sure they are following the proper instructions.

Meeting dates:  9/8/2025 (Wood), 10/6/2025 (Wood), 10/20/2025 (Baker), 11/3/2025 (Wood), 11/17/2025 (Baker), 12/1/2025 (Wood), 12/15/2025 (Baker), 1/5/2026 (Wood), 1/12/2026 (Baker), 2/2/2026 (Wood), 2/9/2026 (Baker), 3/2/2026 (Wood), 3/16/2026 (Baker), 4/13/2026 (Wood), 4/20/2026 (Baker), 5/4/2026 (Wood), 6/1/2026 (Wood).
