Chandigarh Passengers on trains running between the Ambala-Chandigarh
section
will no longer have to wait for ages, either at railway stations or to
reach
their destinations, due to fog. The Railways has decided to install
the fog
safety mechanism on all the Mail and Express trains running on this
section.

The ‘fog safe’ or more appropriately the ‘suraksha kavach’,
currently
being run on trial basis by the Northern Railways’ Ambala Division,
is a
technology based on the Global Positioning System (GPS).

This will be extended to the Ambala-Chandigarh section by next year
after its
successful run on all the Mail and Express trains in Saharanpur,
Ludhiana,
Rajpura, Bhathinda and Lucknow section.

“While updating the fog-fighting mechanisms from manual to
technological three
years ago, the GPS-based ‘fog safe’ technology was installed in
the Mail and
Express locomotives. The trial results indicate that its success rate
can be
very high,†Divisional Railway Manager H K Jaggi told Newsline.

Explaining the mechanism of the technology, Jaggi said: “The â
€˜suraksha
kavach’, as the name indicates, has been designed to avoid accidents
which
occur due to reduced visibility during winters. As the position of the
trains is
monitored through satellite by the drivers, the chances of accidents
and delay
are reduced to almost minimum.â€

Since no safety mechanism or technology can be installed without
rigorous trials
and successful results, even this one has been put to meticulous
trials on
several trains.

“As safety needs to be seen in totality, for this warning system
too, reports
on its performance are being collated and attempts are being made to
come up
with more accurate results,†said Aneet Dulat, Indian Railway
Catering and
Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) Chief Regional Manager.

There are chances that an improved version of this GPS technology may
be used on
the Ambala-Chandigarh section, after overcoming all the shortcomings
and adding
more functions to it, Jaggi added.
