Mumbai: Soon, commuters aboard local trains on Western line will get
a dose of entertainment while travelling. The WR is planning to
install LCD TVs in five of its local trains making Western Railway
(WR) the first in the history of Indian Railways to install TVs on
the trains. According to sources in WR, a 12-car local train
equipped with LCD TVs will be introduced as a pilot project later
this month.

After the LCD TV screens on outstation trains like Mumbai —
Ahmedabad Shatabdi Express and then on Mumbai — Delhi Rajdhani
express, now commuters of Mumbai local trains at WR will be able to
enjoy entertainment programmes during their journey. CP Sharma,
Divisional Railway Manager, Mumbai Division, WR, said, "WR
administration has sanctioned installation of LCD TVs in five local
trains. Of these, installation process is almost complete in one
train. It would be ready to roll by this month-end."

"There will be four LCD TVs in the motor van and six in each of the
coaches i.e. each local train will have 70 LCDs. Depending ion the
response, all local trains will be equipped with LCDs," said an
official from the Western Railway. These five local trains will be
equipped with monitors in accordance with the design given by W R.
Apart from entertainment programmes, there will be commercial
advertisements, social messages and awareness programmes by WR.

According to Western Railway sources, Hype Private Ltd has been
given the contract for installation of LCD TVs in five EMU rakes. Of
these, two will be nine-car rakes and three will be 12-car ones. A
maintenance contract has been given for five years. The company will
give the Railways Rs 45 lakh per annum.

The idea of introducing TV screens in trains was first materialised
by WR in March 2007 after passengers of Shatabdi enjoyed customised
entertainment system on board. Recently, a contract has been awarded
for installing LCD TVs in Mumbai- Delhi Rajdhani. Soon, the Rajdhani
express will be equipped with 150 LCD TVs
