Hi Everyone,

I spent the day with Dad.  I had heard that he had improved significantly.  Earlier in the day, I was a little disappointed, but then late in the afternoon, he perked up.  He was able to inform me (in excruciating detail) of the Anthony Weiner scandal.  He ate well.  He made it to the bathroom on his own. (He needed help getting out.)

Dad is planning to return to his apartment on Saturday.  He would have some help there for some of the time.  I'm not sure that will happen, but who knows?

I will go with him to his doctor's appointment on Wednesday, so I should know more at that time.

BTW:  Dad's new mattresses arrive at his place this week.  I'm starting a pool on how many times we will need to return them.  Anyone in?

J

P.S.  Though his (and for that matter my) knowledge of Star Wars is somewhat (re: COMPLETELY) lacking, he clearly enjoyed Emily's e-mail.  I'd encourage everyone to drop him a line every few days.  It's something that brings a smile to his face.

Thanks for the update John.  Just to make the pool fair, I suggest that everyone predict the number of nano-seconds it will take after he touches it for the first time.

Hi Grandpa,

In 11 hours I will be done with my first year at UCLA!! My last final is an essay exam in medical anthropology. I can't wait to be done with exams! The past week has been hectic because, as usual, all of my procrastination caught up with me and I've been putting in lots of hours at the library to make up for all the days I avoided it during the quarter. My friend Victoria arrived from London on Sunday night. She has a second cousin who lives in Santa Monica so she spent the day with him since I was stuck studying. Tomorrow night Cristina will arrive from Madrid so the three of us will have 10 days together and I'm planning on showing them as much of LA and San Diego as I can.

Victoria went to bed a few hours ago and I forgot to warn her about "the midnight yell" during finals week which is a tradition where at midnight all the students in Westwood go out onto their balconies and rooftops and scream at the top of their lungs. The idea is to relieve stress but unfortunately Vicky was woken up with quite a start!

Caitlyn (my roommate) and I took a study break to pack up some things in our apartment since out subletters will be moving in next week. We were lucky to find two girls who are here for the summer from North Carolina and Illinois and are both working as interns. They each needed a place for the same time that Caitlyn and I will be gone so it worked out really well.

I hope that you continue to feel stronger and I can't wait to see you. Love you lots!!!

Sam xoxo

It was a pretty good day for Dad.  He is able to get himself into the wheelchair and from their to his walker.  (This is a major improvement.) On the other hand, his breathing is still rather labored a good part of the time.  He took a long (three-hour) nap this afternoon.

We go down to see his heart surgeon (Brewster) tomorrow.  He's running out of mysteries on tape, so I'll stop at the Braille Institute on the way back from SD and see what I can find.

Then, on Thursday, we are supposed to go to his apartment for a trial run.

The mattress has arrived, by the way.  It will be there for at last 48 hours...all you pool entrants.  Then, we will see what's what.

John!

I think you should be disqualified from the pool right away simply due to your glaring grammar error.

If Gramps can get himself from their (their what?) to his walker, he has more problems than we initially thought.

Oh dear.

And you, my leeeeetle darling, are disqualified for not knowing the difference between a grammar and a spelling error!
