Hi All,
There is one internet network for this entire village and the line was cut earlier this week so we have not had access. We are packing up tonight and leaving early tomorrow morning for Dundee. St. Lucia has been fun but its a tiny town so 10 days was definitely enough time here. Our hotel is walking distance to the beach and the water is really warm so we have been able to spend out down time there. Today we visited Cape Vidal which is a beautiful beach about 45 minutes away with awesome snorkeling. We drove through a game reserve and saw rhinos, zebra, hippos, and crocs. We rode around in trucks that have been modified with open beds with benches welded to the back so although it is a little windy you get a great view of the animals. We spent last week working on two service learning projects. The first was running summer camp in the mornings for kids in the Kuala village. These people were relocated to a remote area during the apartheid and have little access to resources, employment opportunities, or schools. I loved working with the kids and was really sad when out last day rolled around on Friday. The second project involved building a fence and helping to construct a building for a nursery in another close by rural village. This project was unfortunately poorly organized but in the end the fence was built and the nursery is much improved.
Next week the pace will change as we are done with the service learning part of the trip so we will be spending more time touring and listening to speakers etc. We will have a guided tour through Johannesburg by a history professor and colleague of our UCLA professors.
Due to the lack of internet access here, we all had difficulty registering for classes but I managed to get 2 of the classes I need and I'm on the wait list for 2 more. Now that I'm a SENIOR, I have priority so I'm hoping it won't be a problem.
All in all, the trip has been wonderful so far. Our guide and driver from Cape Town is staying with us throughout the trip which has been nice since he knows this part of the country really well.
I'm out of time at this little internet cafe but I hope this finds you all well and I'll write more soon!
Love,
Sam
