Hello,

I am thrilled to share the exciting news that I will be co-leading a research project in the recently accepted Cooperative Research Center "Small Data," funded by the esteemed German Research Foundation (DFG). As part of this initiative, I am pleased to announce a fully-paid (100% TVL13 contract) PhD position available at the Machine Learning Lab, University of Freiburg.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a cutting-edge project titled "Learning fast and efficient hyperparameter control for deep reinforcement learning on small datasets." In this project, we aim to optimize deep reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms by focusing on hyperparameter tuning. By developing automated techniques for setting hyperparameters in a sample-efficient manner, we aim to reduce uncertainty and enhance the performance of deep RL applications, particularly on small datasets.

To qualify for this position, we are seeking candidates who meet the following criteria:
  • Master's degree or equivalent in computer science, machine learning, or related fields.
  • Strong understanding of and hands-on experience with reinforcement learning and deep learning.
  • Experience in hyperparameter optimization techniques is a plus.
  • Advanced programming skills in Python, preferably with familiarity in PyTorch.
If you are passionate about this position, I encourage you to apply via the following link: https://www.smalldata-initiative.de/projects/c04/. Please indicate "C04 - Noor Awad" as your first supervisor choice when applying.

If you have any questions or require additional information, please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly at [aw...@cs.uni-freiburg.de]. I look forward to receiving applications from talented and motivated individuals who are eager to contribute to this exciting research endeavor.

Thank you for your attention, and please feel free to share this opportunity with anyone who might be interested.

Best regards,

Dr. Noor Awad
