FAPESP Post-doctoral Fellowship - Call for applications
**********************************************************
The FAPESP project "SMART: Sustainable Management of Agriculture with the Intelligent Computing Continuum" (bv.fapesp.br/en/auxilios/116446) has an open Postdoctoral position available at the Federal University of ABC (UFABC).
The research theme is "Smart Application Development for the IoT Computing Continuum," addressing the challenges of developing smart agriculture applications across the IoT continuum (IoTinuum). This involves considering the inherent distribution of the end-to-end path between devices and the cloud, as well as the need for individual services to run in multiple stages in between. The SMART project aims to develop and deploy a trustworthy platform for smart agriculture across the IoTinuum, from field sensors to the cloud. Developing software architectures for IoT thus involves interacting with various software components that play distinct roles. A current challenge is understanding the big picture involving IoT Smart Applications over an IoTinuum-based distributed infrastructure and developing software that is aware of and adequately exploits these characteristics. Software must be built from several small microservices that run through different IoTinuum stages and migrate among them whenever possible and necessary to fulfill their requirements. Also, even current software functions treated as atomic might need to be divided into smaller ones that span the IoTinuum but collectively behave as one piece. This is crucial for application-specific models that encompass various algorithms, equations, methods, techniques, and business rules, transforming data into actionable knowledge.
The general objective of this postdoc scholarship is the design and implement an application development methodology for the IoTinuum that may consist of a unified view of the application as a single piece of code that is broken down into a variety of microservices (or even nanoservices) by an automated compilation process and may execute in different stages of the IoTinuum. This project has four specific goals:
Conceive a unified view of an application as a single piece of code (a script) that can be further broken down into many (micro or nano) services.
Conceive a compilation process that takes as input the previous script and generates many (micro or nano) services as output.
Conceive a language model for (micro or nano) services that may run in multiple stages of the IoTinuum (e.g., using WebAssembly)
Conceive and implement a structure for the resulting code that may follow a DAG (directed acyclic graph) and generate code in a format to be deployed over the IoTinuun.
A highly motivated candidate is expected to show a background in the following concepts:
- IoT, cloud, fog, edge, and the computing continuum
- Programming language paradigms and compilation techniques
- Advanced programming language skills
- Advanced English language skills
- Strong publication record
The candidate must hold a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, with less than 7 years since graduation. The fellowship's duration is 24 months, and the monthly stipend is R$12.570,00 plus 10% for research expenses. Also, there is an Installation Grant (fapesp.br/7771/auxilio-instalacao) covering an additional monthly fellowship payment and ground/air transportation expenses (by reimbursement, once the researcher is in São Paulo / Brazil).
The term for this scholarship is expected to start in January 2026.
