Dear all,

I'm excited to share that FingerVision Inc. is looking for a 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐀𝐈 / 𝐑𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫 to lead the development of our next-generation visuotactile robot learning system.

FingerVision is a robotics startup born out of Carnegie Mellon University, built around the world's first 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧-𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐫. We're looking for someone to drive AI model development for our FV Imitation Learning Kit — Japan's only dual-arm robot system that fuses a visuotactile sensor-equipped gripper with state-of-the-art imitation learning.

I welcome candidates with strong experience across 𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠, from tele-operated data collection pipelines through model training, inference, and field deployment. You'll get to implement frontier methods like ACT, Diffusion Policy, and VLA directly into a product used by real manufacturing, food, and logistics customers.

We're also proud to share that FingerVision was recently selected, together with Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Osaka University, FANUC, and Yaskawa Electric, for METI/NEDO's 𝐆𝐄𝐍𝐈𝐀𝐂 program to build a 𝐕𝐓𝐋𝐀 (Vision-Tactile-Language-Action) foundation model using visuotactile data collected from real manufacturing sites. It's a rare opportunity to work at the intersection of cutting-edge research and industry-scale deployment, alongside Japan's leading robot manufacturers.

Details

FingerVision is a robotics startup born out of Carnegie Mellon University. Our breakthrough vision-based tactile sensor allows robots to autonomously handle delicate, contact-rich tasks that were once thought to require a human touch. We're leveraging this technology to redefine automation in logistics, manufacturing, and food processing.

Background

While competitors dominate the imitation learning space with sensor-free systems, our core thesis is clear: tactile sensing quantifiably improves success rates on contact-rich tasks. This role is about turning that thesis into a product — and that product into a global market standard.

Role

  • Evaluate and select frontier techniques in tactile robot learning — including visuotactile imitation learning and VTLA models — and set the product's technical direction

  • Own the full development stack end-to-end: tele-operation and data collection pipelines, model training, inference, and production deployment

  • Integrate visuotactile sensors, cameras, and robot arms into a unified system that automates pick-and-place and contact-rich tasks (grasping, insertion, cable routing, etc.) with high repeatability

  • Work directly with customers across manufacturing, food, and logistics to develop visuotactile imitation learning systems from scratch — from PoC design through field deployment

Requirements (Must)

  • Proficiency in Python or C++, with experience developing in a Linux environment

  • Deep understanding of robot manipulation with hands-on implementation experience

  • Experience building robot control systems using imitation learning or reinforcement learning

  • Practical experience developing robotics applications with ROS/ROS2

  • Proficiency in designing, training, and evaluating deep learning models with PyTorch

  • Experience building systems that process sensor data (cameras, force/torque, tactile sensors)

  • Deep understanding of computer vision — both deep learning-based and classical — with implementation experience

Requirements (Nice to have)

  • Implementation experience with ACT, Diffusion Policy, or Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models, while understanding the benefits of other models such as RNNs and CNNs.

  • Experience training and deploying models with dual-arm teleoperation systems, or building teleoperation systems from scratch

  • Experience with robot motion learning using tactile sensors

  • Field deployment experience with industrial or collaborative robots

Employment

Full-time, based in Koto-ku, Tokyo (with occasional travel to trade shows and client sites). Flextime system; hybrid/remote work available.
