Post-Doc position in Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning
Group of Machine Learning, Jagiellonian University, Kraków, Poland
The research group led by Dr Rafal Kucharski at the GMUM Group of Machine Learning at Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at Jagiellonian University in Kraków (est. 1364) invites applications for PhD position in the COeXISTENCE research funded under prestigious ERC Starting Grant .
We are looking to hire PostDoctoral Researcher (12 months with possible extensions), ideally with a background in deep reinforcement learning, holding a PhD degree in STEM sciences, with a strong academic record track.
We offer a competitive salary ~3600€ with 100% research focus – no teaching and admin obligations.
In COeXISTENCE, we pioneer the very specific problem that our cities may face in future, when autonomous vehicles are efficiently navigating across our cities. We formulate it as MARL problem, for which we developed a dedicated software RouteRL and present benchmark URB at NeurIPS 2025.
You will focus on developing MARL algorithms for agent-based models of urban mobility:
1. You will work on a daily basis with PhD students to coordinate the algorithmic development
2. You will interface between hardware (nVIDIA framework) and our RouteRL improving scalability
3. You will model the multi-agent virtual environment where collaborative intelligent machines use deep reinforcement learning to outperform humans in their urban mobility.
4. You will develop your own challenging research agenda, contributing towards discovery of new phenomena in complex social systems of the future.
5. You will be part of an interdisciplinary team and member of the international scientific community, communicating your results at the leading conferences and in the journals.
6. You will develop your IT skills towards the timely and challenging complex social systems.
We are looking for outstanding and highly motivated candidates with potential to excel in research, and who are looking to join a dynamic, curiosity-driven research group. COeXSITENCE offers a stimulating research environment with research topics as diverse as: game theory, deep reinforcement learning, complex social systems, sustainability, urban mobility, agent based modelling, discrete choice theory.
Qualifications:
We are looking to hire PostDoctoral Researcher with a background in deep reinforcement learning, ideally holding a PhD degree in computer science with experience in RL (however other interesting skill sets are welcomed). You will focus on implementing RL frameworks into the agent-based models of urban mobility.
Ideal candidates will have excellent programming skills and background in STEM (in particular mathematics, statistics, physics or complex systems) – enabling smooth implementation of algorithmic and theoretical concepts into the working scientific software.
Ideally, you shall have:
Jagiellonian University (est 1364), Kraków, Poland:
Come and join us at one of the oldest universities in Europe, founded 1364 in Kraków (Poland) with Copernicus and Pope John Paul II in its alumni.
With one of the leading young and successful Machine Learning groups in Central Europe (GMUM) and this prestigious ERC Starting Grant, the Jagiellonian University is the place for young scholars to grow.
Kraków is one of the most wonderful medieval cities in Poland, Europe. Its breathtaking scenery and rich history are only an invitation to this stunning nation full of modern spaces, trendy restaurants, and bars. Furthermore, the combination of the city’s housing ratings, cost of living, and healthcare are very attractive worldwide make it an ideal choice to relocate and be living in Krakow. No wonder, Krakow has become increasingly popular as an expat location in recent years.
With this project, we can offer highly competitive salaries (Western Europe level, with the living cost at ~50%).
