Lloyd St Bees: Fortune Favors Those That Preorder

Holiday greetings everyone! We are thrilled to announce that the preorder reservations will be starting TODAY here at Lloyd St Bees. Looking for local bees? Sick of buying bees imported from out west or the south? Check out our nuc or queen page for full details! The Lloyd St. Bees online shop is open for local WI VSH mite resistant nucs and queen reservations. You will notice that when you make your reservations, you aren’t required to pay a deposit. If you’re wondering why, it’s because we already own our bees and we don’t need to go down south to purchase and pick them up like the other guys. If an item is sold out, please feel free to reach out to us and we will make another announcement if we have more availability as we get closer to spring.

If you are a new beekeeper or planning on installing your nuc with only foundation, we highly suggest purchasing a spring nuc and not an overwintered nuc. A spring nuc will be more eager to draw out all those foundation frames for you and less likely to swarm. They will also grow at a more manageable rate for a new beekeeper, while at the same time being large enough to split at the end of the season.

We are offering our overwintered or spring single deep colonies this spring too. For the 2024 season, the price will include the woodenware that you will receive with the bees installed and ready to go. Simply take the colony home, set it in place and open the entrance. Bam! You have yourself a colony. This is the perfect starter for a new beekeepers who need woodenware. If given drawn comb and managed correctly, they will produce a summer honey crop.

We strongly urge folks that want to purchase an overwintered nuc have access to drawn frames. These nucs grow rapidly and will need more management from the beekeeper. If given drawn comb and managed correctly, they will produce a summer honey crop.

For 2024, we will be offering both mated queens and virgin queens again. If you have a colony you would like to split in spring, we suggest you use a virgin queen. Our virgin queens will be available starting in mid May compared to our mated queens that you will have to wait till June for. The mated queens are good for making splits after the spring honey flow, but we like using our virgin queens all season the best. You can read more about using virgin queens in our article for American Bee Journal “Virgin Queens Take The Throne Best”.

Thank you,

Trevor
