Makeen, Your Two Calls can Save Lives

The US Secretary of State Tillerson will be visiting Myanmar for the first time on November 15, 2017.

It is, therefore, critical for him to hear from you and your representatives right away.

During this visit, it is crucial that Mr. Tillerson mentions the Rohingya by name and demand the end of genocide. Honest public comments will send a clear signal that the new administration will not step back from previous commitments to a restoration of Rohingya rights.

Secretary Tillerson should challenge the Myanmar government to either stop genocide or face full sanctions. Many of Myanmar’s public statements have been dishonest and serve as a delaying tactic.

Urgent: Call & Tweet

Talking Points

  • The Secretary of State must name the Rohingya in his public comments in Myanmar.
  • All Rakhine State must be fully accessible to international relief and independent media.
  • The US should demand an immediate end to the violence against Rohingya and all ethnic groups.
  • Repatriation of Rohingya must be linked to full return of lands and citizenship rights.
  • To support the UN investigation into the mass rape, killing, and other abuses we demand the Government of Burma permit the UN investigation team to enter Burma.
  • Threaten them with full sanctions if they do not stop genocide.

Background

  • The Rohingya are an indigenous people living in their ancestral lands.
  • They were always citizens until their citizenship was taken away in 1982 as the genocide began.
  • The Rohingya are one of the most persecuted people on the planet.
