 Burma Task Force

Please Call Your Senator to Vote Rohingya Resolution

Assalamu alaikum,

As of now, according to the UN, 290,000 Rohingyas have been forced to flee from Burma, while thousands are being killed and drowned. 52% of the women surveyed by the UN were raped.

Some teenagers were gang-raped by the military inside Mosques.
400,000 are wandering in forests and mountains in fear for their lives, while the UN is blocked from providing food, water or aid.

As we organize for the September 16th rallies, let us use this time to move the US Senate to condemn Burma, demand restoration of Rohingya citizenship, and block military assistance (or arming) to them.

If you are not in the US, please contact your foreign minister urging them to use their influence to stop this genocide.

Call Your Senator Now to Save Lives

First look up your Senator's contact information here.

Please connect with your Senators in the following order:
  • Tweet first
  • Call their DC office and the local office
  • Comment through their website and their Facebook page
  • Get your organization and Masjid to do the same. It is absolutely legal for a Masjid to do that. It actually gives more weight to the message.
  • Contact your interfaith partners to do the same.
  • Ask the political donors in the community to do the same.
  • Visit the Senator's office

Ask Two Things from Your Senator

  • Support S. Res. 250. A bipartisan resolution condemns attacks on Rohingyas and calls for the restoration of Rohingya citizenship. It is introduced by U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) and John McCain (R-AZ). Here is the full text of S. Res. 250.
  • Ask your Senators to support bipartisan Senate Amendment 607 to the National Defense Authorization Act that has been introduced by Senators Markey, Gardner and Cardin, to stop funding the Burmese military.

Talking Points

  • Tell them you live in their state.
  • Appreciate that both the resolution and the amendment are bi-partisan
  • Tell them to support both the resolution AND the amendment
  • Remind tthem that:
    • Rohingyas are indigenous people of Burma living in their ancestral lands.
    • They were always citizens and always had voting rights until their citizenship was taken away by the military regime in 1982.

On the authority of Abu Abbas Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: One day I was behind the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) [riding on the same mount] and he said, “O young man, I shall teach you some words [of advice]: Be mindful of Allah and Allah will protect you. Be mindful of Allah and you will find Him in front of you. If you ask, then ask Allah [alone]; and if you seek help, then seek help from Allah [alone]. And know that if the nation were to gather together to benefit you with anything, they would not benefit you except with what Allah had already prescribed for you. And if they were to gather together to harm you with anything, they would not harm you except with what Allah had already prescribed against you. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried.”

It was related by at-Tirmidhi, who said it was a good and sound hadeeth.

Another narration, other than that of Tirmidhi, reads: Be mindful of Allah, and you will find Him in front of you. Recognize and acknowledge Allah in times of ease and prosperity, and He will remember you in times of adversity. And know that what has passed you by [and you have failed to attain] was not going to befall you, and what has befallen you was not going to pass you by. And know that victory comes with patience, relief with affliction, and hardship with ease.
