Hi Everybody,

I am afraid that you have missed the importance of the RTE 29 -- Rivers Edge Road interchange issue.

The new proposed changes to the Rivers Edge Community totally dismiss the safety issue for the school children living in the Rivers Edge Community in an effort for the State to implement the least costly solution and remove the traffic light on Rte 29. The only important issue is the school children safety issue.

It is difficult for anyone to believe that you cannot find $50 million in the State budget that exceeds $44 billion to insure the safety of school children of hardworking Maryland taxpayers as they travel to and from school.

This just reveals how little you elected politicians care one about the families and voters living in the Rivers Edge Community. You politicians believe that spending tax money elsewhere is more important than protecting the children in the Rivers Edge Community. The tax money should first be spent on projects that benefit the taxpayers who pay for them e.g. keeping their children safe when commuting to and from school.

The State Highway Administration has caved to the political pressure from you and  politicians to propose an unsafe and cheaper plan than the previously recommended Rte 29 overpass.

I see three safe alternatives:

1.    The cheapest is to install a traffic light on Northbound Rte 29. Cheap and safe.

2.    The recommended Alternative #5. Not so cheap but safe.

3.    The John Hopkins Road alternative. Not so safe and not so cheap to make it safe.

Without the traffic light on Rte 29 South rush hour traffic would run both South and North at speeds of around 80 miles an hour. It is difficult for me and my 2000 Saturn second cousin to a Yugo and third cousin to a Trabant to merge into Southbound traffic before encountering the Middle Patuxent River Bridge. To avoid having a GMC Denali or Lincoln SUV with a choose civility sticker on the rear bumper from smashing at 80 MPH into the rear end of a Rivers Edge Community school bus several things must be done. These are:

1.    Both North and South bound bridges over the Middle Patuxent River must be expanded to 4 lanes by adding an extra lane to each side.

2.    There must be a fifth lane added on both North Bound and South Bound Rte 29. The South bound lane must run from Rivers Edge Road to John Hopkins Road So the no school bus has to merge into the South Bound Rte 29 traffic. The North bound lane must run from John Hopkins Road to the Rte 32 East merge lane.

3.    There must be a traffic circle built to eliminate the Johns Hopkins traffic light that blocks the South Bound Rte 29 traffic from turning left on to the Rte 29 over pass. Even if the children are all forced to go to the River Hill School, they still must take Northbound Rte 29 to come home.

Did the SHA ever examine these safety upgrades. The safety of children outweighs and cost!

Shame on you all!

I believe that critical accusations are unproductive. All that it accomplishes is alienating decision makers, and deflating our good suggestions. Even if they are corrupt, uncaring, irresponsible, whatever, it's best let it alone.

Sorry, but sometimes you need to get their attention and focus on the important issue.

The sugar sweet approach has failed so far.

Time to try something new.

Pete

Your discussion suggests another option to consider. If an overpass will increase the value of Rivers Edge properties, then it might be worth a special levy on residents. I'm sure that won't go over well with some, and they may say it's extortion. But is it so evil that you would rather lose access to northbound 29 than pony up? Just an idle thought.

Hi Larry,

Great idea, but I have no cushy Government Retirement and must live on Social Security and minute savings. If I get to 40 years living in this house I can save 20% on the $7,000+ property taxes.

What most people fail to understand is that sales, gasoline, and real estate taxes hurt the poor the most.

But if it makes the commute for school children safer than the other proposals, I will suck it up.

Hi Larry,

Also a complex financial trade-off like that carries no weight with politicians.  How would they implement it? Too much work for them.

Nice non-productive thought. Sorry for being blunt.
