Hey Guys,

As Bob mentioned, we don't want to clutter Alex's training log with bickering/discussions.  I think a general comment thread would be appropriate.  We could move the current discussion(wording?) here as well as bump this thread for future announcements or whatever is needed.  I'll start by saying that I am currently tanning for 2x 20 minute sessions a week, so you could say I've reached an all-time low.

Fran- After a heavy lifting session of legs with 20 working sets with 48 seconds rest between sets and 325 seconds rest between exercises and you walked 934 feet to the gym but skipped 1034 feet back to the car how many excess calories would you have if you drove past 5 guys driving north at 9 pm at 42 mph with an south east wind of 6 mph after deducting TDEE, after muscle protein synthesis, after refilling glycogen stores, after your body has done everything it needs??????

I'm also confused as to why we're discussing an excess of 500cal if by some amazing aspect we've been able to determine the exact amount of calories required to achieve maximum muscle generation.  What the fuck is the point of this hypothetical?

Louie- Nobody knows because TDEE is moving target. Just because you think you ate extra 500 calories doesn't mean that there is excess 500 calories in the body. The point I'm trying to make is that any energy that is left after all that will be stored, whether thats 100calories, 200, or 500. If you can prove otherwise, I'm pretty sure there is a Nobel prize waiting for you.

I think it is empirical that training with absolute no fat gain will yield less results than training with slight fat gain, which will the same way yield less results compared to training with bigger fat gain. Since that increase is not linear, I was trying to discuss the most optimal approach to this.

Tried Saranac Pumpkin Ale this weekend, decent but nothing special. On a brighter side, I found out BJ's sells beer, so a 24 pack (bottles not cans) was $22 which is like less than Bud Light.

I went to Macgregor's a while back on our last cheat meal day and they had a ton of pumpkin ales.  I forgot which one I had, but it was absolutely amazing.  My goto is Sam Adam's Octoberfest, but I think you can do better.  Remember to drink your pumpkin love at room temperature as it's not some college piss and I think it makes a huge difference (not to get all beer snobby but this topic is one of the first things on my todo list).  I love pumpkin and apple everything, so I really want to catch up on all my favorite Fall things, if it weren't for this diet I probably would have been at Tim Horton's everyday this month (probably why I'm on this diet in the first place....)

Looks like there's talk of a bench-for-reps meet sometime this Winter.  Just wanted to mention it while Megan figures out whatever she has to do.  I know the mini-meet is usually first, but the bench competition is much more popular and Megan's selective hearing kicked in when I mentioned that the mini-meet is always at the end of October.  I wonder how many times I can bench 165...

I'm actually really interested in seeing this, as well as how your strength comes back after such a long hard cut. I will be stalking your log. Do you think overall you'll end up with a better strength:bodyweight ratio or wilks a month or two after the show than before?

I'm not sure when, check on the Facebooks, I saw them talking about it but I don't usually read too far into it because most of them annoy me.

There's no pretending I haven't had strength losses, I'm a tiny little bitch right now.  I expect a pretty serious comeback right off the back without too much weight gain though, just as I start to straight bar bench again and do some real exercises.  I would expect a much better strength/weight ratio in the coming months, but it's definitely going to take some time.

As a reference, my best bench before the training was 340 at a weight of about 225lbs.  To get that same ration (1.5111111) at a weight of 180 I only need to bench 275.

Yeah this is what I thought. I told Megan I thought you'd be benching 300 @ 185 lbs and she didn't believe me. Prove her wrong lol.

On another note, I've found the most annoying god damn injury for a weightlifter to have. A split lip. It won't freaking heal because I'm shoving large food items down my face hole all day and it resplits and bleeds every time I open my mouth wide. Had this thing almost 3 weeks. In before cock sucking jokes.

I guess I'll put this here. Do you guys think I have forward lean here? I think my core is a huge weakness, as with many people. But it might be that I'm just squatting wrong and throwing the bar forward, out of the ideal bar path, because my main focus is on raising my hips. Any advice on cues or what I should be doing with my back/chest to keep that from happening?

^Agreed. The only thing I'd say is try to get your elbows farther forward and under the bar. I think that should help with the leaning forward too. I'm guessing some of that is shoulder mobility?

I wanted to respond to something you posted earlier about high bar but I've been stupid busy with work and forgot.

I can only think of one lifter off of the top of my head in all of the years I was in the RIT gym that could high-bar squat with any kind of proficiency.  High bar squatting definitely isn't for everybody so if you can't find a good bar position just go with low-bar; don't fight whatever's natural for your body.  As far as high bar, the ideal bar position is going to be wherever you can accelerate the bar the fastest while staying relatively upright.  And this means testing with at least 80% or 85%.

Though the camera angle was a little poor, I didn't see anything where I would think you should stop and work on technique.  As long as you don't start turning it into a good morning once the intensity starts getting circa max effort range, I would work on staying consistent with your current form and solidifying the movement pattern as habit.

Yeah other than the bar position on my back, high bar feels much more natural than low bar, even with the same foot position. Last nights squats were great and I found the sweet spot for the bar on every set so I think I just need to keep pounding away at them and it should become just as automatic as getting into position for the deadlift is for me. The good morning factor is the only thing I'm worried about for now, but it hasn't been too bad yet. I'll keep filming sets so I can keep an eye on it. Thanks for the feedback.

Yeah you can compete as an individual or with a team, $20 entry fee for individual, $50 for a team of 4. I don't know if it's just an entry fee thing or if your totals are added together for scoring or something. I'm sure some random dude that no one has ever seen before will put up an 1800 total or something and just destroy me lol.
