Hey guys-

I've been pres for about a year now, and I feel I've committed a lot of time and effort into the club.

A few things I ask of you--

1. Is there any equipment that you think we could use in the gym/shed that's under $300? That's about the amount I'd be able to spend the club's money easily.

2. I've been thinking about implementing a fundraiser for a charity that we could do yearly. Maybe even patent it, cause I haven't heard anything like it in my minor weightlifting experience.

My proposal: Curls for the Girls

     Event Details:
  • Sponsorship from major nutrition/health/fitness companies that will pay for event awards and participation shirts
  • Participants will go around with a pledge sheet prior to the event. These pledges will go toward Breast Cancer Society (see -> "Girls"). A pledge amount can range anything from $0.01 to $10.00 per pound curled.
  • Event will be held outside, and anyone can "compete." There will be multiple stands for participants to curl to their limit, in turn raising fundraiser money for breast cancer.
    • For example - Someone curls 130lb x 5. They were pledged by a single person for $0.01/lb. this raises $8 from that one person. Multiple pledges? Multiple moneys. More people competing? Much more moneys.
    • Club will collect 20% of proceeds, 80% will go towards the Society
  • Thoughts-
    • People could choose to curl their max for 3 attempts with standard PL rules, curl half their bodyweight for "x" amount of times, or pick a weight and curl their hearts out.
    • Participants can also opt out of retrieving pledges, and instead pay a flat fee of $15 for students and $25 for non-students. Cause, you know, we're poor.
    • Bi's for Guys - for girls to compete for men.
I really want to know what you guys think. I think this event could raise a TON of money, as anyone can curl. I'm thinking this could be held the week before finals (2 weeks after Strongman). Since it'll be -supposedly- a beautiful spring day, I imagine a lot of people will want to be outside. A lot of publicizing will be required, through RIT and the general public. Remember how stupid those color 5Ks are? And suddenly they're everywhere? I think we could make this huge like that. If we get a specific logo for it, talk about a legacy.

As a club, we created the Strongman as an annual event. This is the Weightlifting Club. I feel like all we do is put on powerlifting meets and the occasional oly event. We need to branch out.  And, fuck, anyone can do curls.

I would really enjoy some constructive feedback. I'm definitely willing to make this thing work.

Thank you.

Go for it Meg, sounds like a good idea. It's very similar to the Barbells for Boobs event that the crossfit community does.

Agreed, it's a really good idea. I always wanted to do this, but at the time it was tire flips I was thinking. this will have more appeal than that. I would simply suggest picking 3 weights and attaching 3 recommended donation amounts for each weight. Then let people sell themselves to the pledges. For example:

50lbs - $0.15 per rep
95lbs - $0.25 per rep
135lbs - $0.50 per rep

Each person curling would then get X amount of pledges for each category (or whichever they think they can do). It keeps the math easy, and allows everyone to bro out and try to one up each other.

You're right though, in order for the club to survive, you'll need events like this. You should post this on FB since hardly anyone reads this group.

I think its an awesome idea. A charity meet is a good way to give back, its good exposure for the club, and having a curl event would be a good way to get people that wouldn't normally do a powerlifting/strongman kinda event.

This might seem a little douchey, but maybe consider choosing a different charity? It's pretty known that the Breast Cancer Society passes on very little (<5%) of their donations to victims/research. A lot more goes to marketing/employee salaries.

Just a thought...I'll support the event whatever you decide to do

I'm glad you bring that up. I am aware that most charities aren't truly not-for-profit. Do you know of any women-related charities out there?  That was simply the first to come to mind.

For sure...Breast Cancer Fund, Breast Cancer Research Foundation, and National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund are good choices if you want to stay with breast cancer. I'm just going off of charitywatch.org and charitynavigator.org, they both rated those 3 really well.

Thank you so much for looking into this! I'll definitely see if I can get one of those involved.

I've said this in the past but we have a few members in fraternities, and frats are really good at raising money. We should team up with one of them for an event like this. You get the added bonus of out bro-ing frat guys in a curl off. Win-win.

Oh believe me I've thought about teaming up with them. We'll also be contributing to a fitness related activity in April with other clubs.
