The last option in the profile selector is the Arguments field, which is arguably the most powerful one of the bunch. In it, you can type a number of arguments or flags, which will be used to launch a new Opera Mobile instance. For example, -displaysize 320 480 -url www.opera.com will launch Opera Mobile with a window size of 320 480 pixels and will load www.opera.com.

Opera Mobile Emulator is a comprehensive application that will help you test your website exactly as it should in tablet and mobile web browsers, without using various physical devices or virtual machines. This small tool runs the same code as Opera's mobile phone version, allowing you to see how your end users will experience your site on mobile devices and tablets.

Opera Mobile features a Profile Selector function that lets you launch distinct instances of Opera Mobile on your computer for testing various phone configurations. The Profile Selector contains a set of popular device profiles, including Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, Samsung Galaxy S III, HTC One X, and many more. You can also create new custom profiles and define various parameters and characteristics, such as User Interface, User Agent String, Resolution, Pixel Density, Arguments, and Window Scale. Existing profiles may be modified and tweaked as well, using the "Save / Save as" button.

There is a wide variety of mobile phones and tablets on the market, each of them having distinct screen sizes and resolutions. This application lets you see how your website would look on all these devices by only using your computer. You can test your site on three types of User Interfaces: Tablets, Touch and Keypad, allowing you to test your site on all types of mobile devices (Tablets, Touch-screen phones, or older mobile phones with only keypad input).

Opera Mobile Emulator is compatible with Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 8.1.

Ruffle is a Flash Player emulator written in Rust. Ruffle runs natively on all modern operatingsystems as a standalone application, and on all modern browsers through the use of WebAssembly.Leveraging the safety of the modern browser sandbox and the memory safety guarantees of Rust,we can confidently avoid all the security pitfalls that Flash had a reputation for.Ruffle puts Flash back on the web, where it belongs - including browsers on iOS and Android!

The obvious first method for testing is to use a mobile device. Few of us can afford to have a fully representative stock of these, but it makes sense to have one or two to test things out. Using a recent iPhone and an Android device will cover the majority of mobile usage and always adds more to your testing than just using an emulator or simulator.

In Google Chrome, you can view your site as it would look on a range of Android devices by toggling mobile view on and off. Right-click on your page, select Inspect from the menu, and then click the device toggle icon at the top left of the inspector window:

Testing on real mobile devices is now an essential part of the web creation process. You can get a pretty representational cross-section of the mobile landcape for a couple hundred bucks. Make an investment in the future of the web. People are accessing the web through the lens of their mobile phones and we need to do our best to give them great user experiences.

Hi, good read. Though it is an expensive option for a starting designer like me. I made a mobile version for my website, and tested it with Opera Mobile emulator. Can you tell me what you think about it as an emulator? I can see why it isnt sufficient, as it does not test crappy connections and such.

We are in an era of cross-browser compatibility, where standards are here to make our lives easier and browser vendors are releasing updates more often than ever in both, desktop and mobile, and specially, trying to be as close as possible to recommended & stable standards.

I totally agree with Karen about the audience you are targeting. It is the first thing we must keep in mind when designing. It would certainly be absurde to just randomly go out and start buying devices just because. For small companies -like myself- a few are enough to test on and the rest are emulators. To expect a developer to buy all these handsets and plans is foolish. We can surely increase our rates to compensate for the device testing problem, but no designer/developer wants the room filled with mobile devices they have to walk over.

Great post and the discussions are very informative too. I am new to mobile web testing and have been looking info difference in javascript engine that I will see in a emulator vs real device? how does jquery behave on a emulator vs real device? We are just launching a mobile version of our website which uses HTML/CSS/Javascript. If you have any insight please let me know. Thank you.

Recently, BrowserStack extended their testing capabilities from desktops to mobile, adding value for hard-pressed designers, developers and marketers. And we wondered: Exactly how good is the BrowserStack tool for testing mobile performance?
