mp3splt-gtk is a free software that allows you to split mp3 and ogg files from several splitpoints, without need of decoding and reencoding. It is useful to split large mp3/ogg to make smaller files or to split entire albums to obtain original tracks.

MP3DC was one of the first tools I tried (among mp3splt-gtk, cool mp3 cutter, and Direct WAV MP3 Splitter from Pristol).
My issue with MP3DC as well as others is that the splits they generate do not have a stable file length measure. I am not sure how this is done; but I play the output files and the the audio time at the end of the seekbar keeps changing (e.g. 5:42, 5:36, 5:27 ) as if the player (VLC) is unable to tell the length of the audio. It gets even funnier: The same file is reported by windows media player to be 13:44 while by itunes 4:58
Mp3Splt-project is a utility to split mp3 and ogg files selecting a begin and an end time position, without decoding. It's very useful to split large mp3/ogg to make smaller files or to split entire albums to obtain original tracks. If you want to split an album, you can select split points and filenames manually or you can get them automatically from CDDB (internet or a local file) or from .cue files. Supports also automatic silence split, that can be used also to adjust cddb/cue splitpoints. You can extract tracks from Mp3Wrap or AlbumWrap files in few seconds. For mp3 files, both ID3v1 & ID3v2 tags are supported. Mp3splt-project is split in 3 parts : libmp3splt, mp3splt and mp3splt-gtk.
I suppose this task might be made easier if mp3splt-gtk could just format the %track% field to include the total number of tracks to start with. EDIT: apparently mp3splt-gtk does not support "total number of tracks" as one of the fields it can include in the output format, which must explain why I chose this method in the first place.
