TheKing is a 1995 Indian Malayalam-language political thriller film written by Renji Panicker and directed by Shaji Kailas, with Mammootty in the lead role as district collector Joseph Alex IAS.[1][2]

The city of Kozhikode has been victimised by a massive communal riot against the slums, costing the lives of 12 civilians. Before the riot happened, a wildlife photographer named Madhu Kumar witnessed a group of criminals transporting explosives through the local forest check post, so he calls up the local police commissioner Shankar and passes on the information. However, the goons managed to capture and murder Madhu to cover their tracks.

While helping the police to fight against the rioters, the aggressive yet honourable DC Thevalliparambil Joseph Alex is suspicious of Shankar's activities and personally investigates the case with the help from his subordinates ASP Prasad and AC Anura Mukherji, who admires Joseph for his honesty and aggressive behaviour against corrupt officials and politicians. Joseph is brought over to a personal hearing with the state minister John Varghese, who berates him over his behaviour while attempting to stop the riots. However, Joseph stands up by reprimanding Varghese for his belief in using his authority to belittle and harass others.

Meanwhile, Madhu's father reaches out to Prasad after filing a case regarding to Madhu's disappearance, resulting Prasad to finally discover Madhu's corpse with his camera, though the film is missing. As the investigation heats up, MP Jayakrishnan is assisting in relief works in the damaged area by meeting the aggrieved entities after his arrival from Delhi. However, it turns out that Jayakrishnan is the mastermind behind the massacre as he planned the riot against the slums to plan a new real estate business in the area. It is revealed that the people involved in the conspiracy are Varghese, Ibrahim Jalal and Shankar, as the latter sent up the goons to murder Madhu to cover their tracks.

The local police medical surgeon Dr. Vijay, who has conducted the autopsy on Madhu's body, deduces that Madhu was murdered, but he ends up being killed in a road accident. Eventually, Joseph finds a new ally named Sanjay, who happens to be Vijay's younger brother and a close buddy of Joseph during his Mussourie training days. Joseph, along with Sanjay and Prasad, finds out that Dr. Vijay was injected with a powerful drug by the same goons who murdered Madhu, which could have contributed to the accident. While Jayakrishnan flies back to Delhi to accept his new job as a cabinet minister in the central government, Joseph arrests and interrogates Jalal, who reveals that the lead goon Ananthashankara Iyer is responsible for murdering Madhu and Dr. Vijay.

After arresting Iyer at a shopping mall, Joseph uses the same sedative to force Iyer into giving out important information about the conspiracy behind the communal riot. Before Joseph and Prasad could escort Iyer to the police station, Iyer's boss Vikram Khorpade, a Mumbai-based crime boss, who has strong ties with Jayakrishnan and being a major player in the conspiracy, arrives and causes a shootout that allowed him to rescue Iyer. Vikram also takes the opportunity to murder Anura before fleeing away with Iyer, much to Joseph's shock.

Declaring this personal, Joseph, Prasad, and Sanjay track down Vikram and his goons to a horse farm, where they kill all of the goons residing there. After Sanjay kills Iyer by hanging him on a chain, Joseph beats up Vikram before taking him into custody, forcing him to reveal the identities of the people behind the conspiracy. Following his return after being sworn as the new cabinet minister, Jayakrishnan is met by an angry Joseph and several officers. Joseph takes the opportunity to expose Jayakrishnan's conspiracy plot to the public, using both Iyer and Vikram's confessions as proof of his findings.

As a result, Jayakrishnan is placed under arrest for conspiracy and murder while Shankar is suspended and arrested by his own officers for the same charges. However, Jayakrishnan refuses to concede defeat and instead takes one of the officers' guns before firing at the crowd, murdering Vikram and several citizens in the process. Jayakrishnan uses the commotion to make a getaway in a car, only for Joseph to shoot the gas tank, causing the car to explode and kill Jayakrishnan. Joseph is then hailed as a hero by the public for his actions.

In 2012, Shaji Kailas made a combined sequel titled The King and the Commissioner, in which Mammootty and Suresh Gopi reprised their roles as Joseph Alex IAS and Bharathchandran IPS, but the sequel was panned by critics and became a box-office bomb.[11][12]

A Pakistan military group under Major. Abu Jalal Rana trespasses Indian waters, targeting New Delhi. However, the plan is intercepted by Dr. Emma John of Intelligence Wing as she informs it to her senior Padmabhushan Dr. Sudarshan - following departmental protocol, they decide to inform the Minister about the group's trespass as the intercepted conversation mentioned the name of the PM Ghanthachalam Paramashiva Rao. Before they can inform Paramashiva Rao, they are killed by two cops, who are joined by I.G. Shankar Ramdas. Unbeknownst to them, Ali Imran, a photojournalist, manages to take pictures of the scene onto his camera.

Meanwhile, Kishore Balakrishnan, the senior analyst at the agency, sets off to see Swami Veerabhadra Chandramoulishwar at his ashram demanding for the information he passed before. A tainted spiritual figure with deeply entrenched connections with prominent politicians in Delhi and even possessing the clout to influence the judiciary, Chandramoulishwar is the disciple of yesteryear Godman Swami Amoorthananda - who had a predominant drug cartel functioning within his ashram. However, Chandramoulishwar is able to suffocate him before pushing him into the Yamuna river. The next day, the bodies of Kishore, Dr. Sudarshan, and Dr. Emma are all found in the riverside. Since both the doctors are seen in an intimate position, the police conclude that Kishore killed the two out of jealousy, and then killed himself right after by drowning himself into the river.

However, Govindankutty Menon (G.K), the Central Home Minister in charge of Internal Security, assigns Joseph Alex I.A.S to investigate the death of Dr. Sudarshan. Paramashiva Rao accords the constitutional status of a commission of inquiry to Joseph's investigation team and reminisces the friendship he had shared with Dr.Sudarshan. As a Rajya Sabha member, Paramashiva Rao was a close friend of Joseph's late father and MP Alexander Thevallipparambil and sarcastically remarks that Joseph never visited him in that capacity. Raman Madhavan, the National Security Advisor and Chandramoulishwar are distressed about the refusal of Paramashiva Rao to sanction a colossal arms deal - termed the Romanov Proposal - as the ratification of the defence contract will ensure huge kickbacks for them.

Swami Chandramoulishwar recollects the assistance rendered by him to Paramashiva Rao to ensure the victory of his minority government during numerous floor tests and decides to eliminate Paramashiva Rao, paving the way for Raman Madhavan to ascend as the next PM - by the orchestration of a security crisis, the seasoned politicians will be compelled to give up Prime Ministerial ambitions concreting Raman's claim. Subsequently, Joseph meets the forensic analyst and ask them to give a fresh report and include the facts that they have excluded deliberately before. After seeing a mysterious man in a black leather jacket walking away from his car, Joseph gets a call from Nanda, the daughter of Minister G.K and a journalist. She shows him the picture of a cop holding a gun towards someone inside a white car.

Imran has a gut feeling that he has seen Dr. Sudarshan in that car. On the other hand, I.G. Bharathchandran IPS, who is on deputation in the Union Home Ministry is assigned to assist Joseph in the probe. Both of them are able to get Shankar arrested, but Shankar is soon killed by Rana in the premises of the Delhi High Court. Shankar had conceded to testify to the court on the conspiracy pertaining to Dr.Sudarshan's murder. After the fiasco at the court, Joseph and Bharath brief G.K about the involvement of Rana in Shankar's death and the ultimate goal of the Pakistan mercenary force is something much more pivotal as per intelligence inputs shared by the American Embassy.

Joseph is called into the PMO to tell that he is off the case now. He retorts and is able to continue with the case after convincing Paramashiva Rao. He states that if something were to happen to Paramashiva Rao, the nation would suffer huge financial loss. The expenses are what Joseph is concerned about rather than Paramashiva Rao's life. Because of this, Chandramoulishwar gets pissed off that he decides to assassinate Paramashiva Rao through Rana. In this way, Raman Madhavan will be the next PM after ensuring support from many coalition party leaders. ACP Arjun captures the PA Ashutosh coming out of Chandramoulishwar's ashram by disguising himself as the driver along with Ubaid Mustafa Meeran.

Although, Ashutosh is taken into custody. However, Pakistan army officers pretending as Delhi Police arrives and asks for Ashutosh's custody. They kills Arjun, where Ubaid manages to kill several Pakistan officers in the shootout, but Rana arrives and kills both Ubaid and Ashutosh. Enraged, Bharath storms into the ashram, but is held at gunpoint by Swami Chandramoulishwar's men. Nevertheless, Joseph appears right in time to save Bharath from getting killed, by killing one of Chandramoulishwar's men. Chandramoulishwar and Raman Madhavan, later at night, are taken into custody. When both of them are about to be taken to the location of the ISI agents.

However, the people who accompanied them are shot dead in front of the building. Minutes later, Bharath and Joseph arrive at the dilapidated cottage with a team of commandos. They manage to defeat the ISI agents, and confront Rana, where Joseph and Bharath draw their guns to shoots Rana respectively on his hand and leg. Joseph comes close to Rana and quips at him before sticking a flag pole (with the national flag on it) into his chest while chanting Bharath Mata ki Jai. After that, they lock Chandramoulishwar and Raman Madhavan in their car and Bharath places a bomb in the car. The bomb explodes, killing both Chandramoulishwar and Raman Madhavan. They head back to the PM's office, and though initially furious, Paramashiva Rao greets them for fulfilling their mission.
