Opportunities and Challenges in Rice Seeds Trade between India and Bangladesh

Seed is a determinant element for the agriculture production. And if that agriculture product is the staple food for more than half the population of country it is crucial for the country to ensure the supply of quality seeds so as to ensure the food security in the nation. Similarity of agro-climatic condition between India and Bangladesh opens up a platform for the mutual exchange of rice seeds. Incidentally large number of noted instances of informal flow of rice seeds across the border further validates the potential of exchange. The paradox is with the existence of acceptability of the rice seeds across the border there aren’t any noted legal flow of the same between the two countries. This is the broad premises behind the project RISTE.

Under the project there will be many briefing papers shading light on the different issues pertaining to this specific subject. Thus, in order to understand the potential opportunities and challenges in rice seeds trade between India and Bangladesh, CUTS has prepared a briefing paper which can be accessed at: http://www.cuts-citee.org/pdf/Briefing_Paper13-Opportunities_and_Challenges_in_Rice_Seeds_Trade_Between_India_and_Bangladesh.pdf

You are requested to provide us with your comments and observations on the paper which will help us not only to make our understanding much deeper and wider but also bring-in inclusivity in our approach towards the project.

Kind Regards to all,
