Barry --

I'm considering the quote included as the first entry in this edition's Wisdom section as follows:
“Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net.” — John Adams

I'm seeing a lot of avarice, ambition, and revenge.

Gallantry, in the more benign connotations of the word, is not apparent. In the more malignant meaning of the word, it is more of a leitmotif , as opposed to the central themes of avarice, ambition, and revenge.

I think George Washington was correct in his quoted statement:
“There exists in the economy and course of nature, an indissoluble union between virtue and happiness; between duty and advantage; between the genuine maxims of an honest and magnanimous policy, and the solid rewards of public prosperity and felicity.”

We may be experiencing what happens when the conditions precedent do not exist, such that the desired outcomes fail.

"It is wise for us to recur to the history of our ancestors. Those who do not look upon themselves a link connecting the past with the future[...} do not perform their duty to the world."

Daniel Webster

Also on point:

"There are people who have never been taught anything, and know everything, have never been anywhere, and understand everything, have never given a moment's thought to anything, and comprehend everything. 'Blessed hands' is the name bestowed on these fortunate beings. The world envies, honors and respects them." --- Sholom Aleichem

I'm not sure how much of this is ironic. It is amusing, in any case. Southerners, I've found in my time living in Louisiana and Tennessee, have the Yin/Yang locution, "Bless their heart!"

I try to think the best about people but can't ignore what you and I see as avarice, ambition and revenge.
