I think we're all steadily retiring.
I provisionally hung up my boots last July. That's not to say that I'll
never do anything in the insurance world again because if any
interesting project came along I'd consider it. But the only insurance
stuff I've done since then was to rebroke the motor insurance on my
wife's car and on my car. I'm not actively looking for a job any more.
I did renew my Chartered Insurance Institute membership, but that's
mostly because they run decent social evenings. Wine tastings, cocktail
masterclasses; that sort of thing. And I do like talking to insurance
people about the good old days over a drink or three - most of the
people who attend these social events are old enough to remember what
insurance was like before it was all computerised and heavily regulated.
I don't know what it's like in other parts of the world, but in the UK
if you worked in insurance back in the 1990s the insurers were *very*
generous in terms of pensions. Non-contributory, defined benefit
pensions. What that means is that pretty much nobody in the insurance
industry is still working by the time they hit 60yo at the moment. I've
hung up my boots at 55yo and would have probably gone five years earlier
if it wasn't for the fact that 55yo is the earliest you can access your
pension in the UK.
That does create a bit of a problem on the basis that between 2000 and
2020 the insurance industry was mostly making people redundant or at
best, not recruiting new people. So although the industry has started
aggressively recruiting new entrants via apprenticeship schemes, there's
very few people left to train them...
