Rutgers Center on Public Security -- “The Place for Spatial Risk Analysis”
Dear RTM user,
On behalf of the Rutgers Center on Public Security (RCPS), below is an update about risk terrain modeling (RTM) and the RTM Manual that you downloaded atwww.riskterrainmodeling.com. As promised in previous reports, we’ll keep this email brief but informative.
***User Response and Access***
-- The RTM Manual has been downloaded nearly 1200 times since it was first posted online in the summer of 2010.
-- The RTM Compendium has been downloaded nearly 300 times since posting in the summer of 2011.
-- You can share your thoughts and read what others have to say at the Risk Terrain Modeling Google Group (http://groups.google.com/group/risk-terrain-modeling). There are now 141 members (a 12% increase since the last RTM update email).
-- The Rutgers Center on Public Security website (www.rutgerscps.org) has been completely redesigned and updated. All traffic to www.riskterrainmodeling.com is now redirected to the main homepage, where you can chose to navigate to RTM related information about either *Crime Analysis* or *Global Threats*. Another key change is that all publications are on one single *Publications* page; many items are full-text and can be downloaded for free.
***Update on Applications***
-- An updated RTM Toolset for ArcGIS 10 is forthcoming. Edits to streamline some of the models were undertaken (voluntarily) by Matthew Airola. Thank you Matt! They are currently under review and will be posted online soon.
***Update on the Rutgers Center on Public Security***
-- We welcome two new colleagues to the Rutgers Center on Public Security. Eric Piza was appointed Research Director for Crime Science. Yasemin Gaziarifoglu was appointed Research Director for Global Mapping. Eric and Yasemin are experienced scholars and innovative researchers.
***Publications and Presentations***
-- The current issue of Cityscape: A Journal of Policy Development and Research has an article about mapping spatial influences of crime correlates. Many other articles in the issue (guest edited by Ron Wilson) are related to RTM and spatial crime analysis. All articles are FREE (full-text) for download: http://www.huduser.org/portal/periodicals/cityscape.html
-- Several new PPT presentations have been posted online, including those from the November 2011 ASC conference in Washington, DC.
-- The Global Risk Terrain Modeling Manual is now in final draft form and will be posted online for free download shortly after the first of the year. This manual is offered as a primer on the conceptual issues surrounding global risk and demonstrates effective ways to apply GIS techniques to global data for the purposes of spatial risk analysis.
-- RTM-related presentations will be given at the upcoming Association of American Geographers conference in New York City, February 24 - 25 (learn more and view the preliminary program at http://www.aag.org/annualmeeting).
***RTM Workshops***
-- The Risk Terrain Modeling Workshop Webinar is a 12 module, 30-day online self-guided course, with three live instructional and interactive webcasts. Another workshop will be scheduled in the Spring 2012. Notifications about dates and registration information will be sent to the RTM Google Group listserv first.
-- The International Association of Crime Analysts (IACA) will soon be offering 1-hour RTM workshop webinars to IACA members and the general public. Joel Caplan will volunteer his time to teach these webinars, beginning in 2012.
***Recent Awards Received***
-- Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS) Donal MacNamara Award for Outstanding Journal Publication. For the article about RTM in Justice Quarterly, 2011, 28(2). The award ceremony will be at the ACJS conference in New York City on March 16, 2012. Link -- Community Engagement Award for Community Research, Rutgers University-Newark Office of the Chancellor. The award ceremony will be in Newark, NJ on December 15, 2011.Link

We welcome your feedback! Please tell us how you are using RTM and/or if you have any constructive feedback. Send a brief or lengthy email to rutge...@gmail.com. We look forward to hearing from you.
Respectfully, Les Kennedy and Joel Caplan
